This place is an absolute gem and somewhere I now like to visit regularly. Usually I get a coffee and a cake of some kind when I’m out walking the coast path, but today I went for breakfast (see photo in my review) which was lovely. The bacon was especially nice, the tomato’s were left on their vine which liked and they were very tasty. Everything was cooked perfectly and it didn’t take very long to arrive either.
Their coffee is excellent, I am yet to find nicer coffee in the area. Their cakes are wonderful - all made in their kitchen. I am particularly fond of the brownies, but everything else on offer looks wonderful and the custard slices (which I have had before) are enormous. Highly recommend the custard slice! I’ve had lunch here before too, which was delicious. Especially the focaccia bread - wow! All the food is cooked excellently and is nice + fresh. I’ve yet to go, but I believe there is another restaurant upstairs (same business). There is also a gelataria outside serving ice cream. I’ve not tried it, but it looks amazing. Service is good. The staff are very friendly and I think Italian run. It has a slightly old fashioned feel to it with the waiters in waistcoats and I quite like this. This is also a dog friendly restaurant, so you can take your dog in with you. They leave water bowls outside for dogs too. I have found some reviews on here which moan about price and I’m aware some locals are a bit sniffy because of this. The pricing is not unreasonable, actually for what you get I think it’s very good value. This is an actual restaurant, not McDonalds where you get ultra processed, deep fried junk thrown at you in a bag to eat with your fingers. So bear that in mind…
Located by the beach and coast path, it’s in an excellent location and plenty of car parking too. Overall this place...
Read moreThis was our 3rd visit to the Upstairs Brasserie area of St Elli's Bay. This time was for a family birthday celebration - we booked as our last meals there were great. The service was VERY slow. 45 mins before our food orders were taken and a long wait for it to arrive. Two meals were tepid on arrival. There was a one year old baby in our party and when his mum went to try and use the baby changing room, she found it locked for a very long time. It appeared that it was in use but during the evening we never saw anyone come out of it. She waited so long in fact, that her meal was going cold, untouched on the table. In the end she had to ask staff if there was another facility, make the trip downstairs to the other changing area and come back up. By then her food (and the baby's) was cold. When we mentioned to the staff that one of the other meals was tepid when it was served he just said he would mention it to the chef. On paying, this family member did receive her dessert for free as recompense. The waiter was not particularly friendly or happy. The waitress didn't know the difference between French and English mustard. French was requested but English was brought. Nice wine. Nice vegetarian options but they do vary - if you don't fancy what's on the menu it is worth asking for other alternatives as they sometimes have them. Asked for plain chicken and chips for a teenager and this was provided. We love having coffee and cake downstairs and after this experience I think we will stick to that - and the ice cream kiosk - we always have great service there. Very friendly chap...
Read moreHidden gem! We came as a two families of 3, each trying something different on the menu. We also had Gelato from the cute ice cream shop extension out front.
Setting: The area surrounding the restaurant is idyllic, and the glass and steel structure of the building overlooks the clean promenade and a surprisingly sandy beach. The interior is decorated with tactile stone and wooden furniture, with tasteful splashes of greenery.
Gelato Shop: Easy 9.5/10 Very hygienic More gelato is made fresh regularly (allegedly daily) The ice cream flavours literally use the ingredients they are named after. Very creative flavours £2.90 for single-scoop (waffle cone) £3.90 for double-scoop (waffle cone) (The most generous serving of double scoop I have seen in my life) Very friendly staff. They were telling stories, and readily explained any ice cream flavour and how it was made. Free tasters of flavours if requested.
Restaurant Food: onion rings are massive and beyond crispy, provide lots for very little money - too much for one person focaccia sandwiches - the focaccia bread has nice buttery crust and is very airy. Loaded with toppings. I was very surprised with how much topping they put onto it. I was a bit disappointed as halloumi wasn’t crusted/buttery as I was expecting but the flavours still worked. fresh custard slices - absolutely exceptional, we got ours directly from when they exited the kitchen. It costed £4.20 but we shared it between 3, as everyone...
