Racial Profiling Went to this pub at 6pm with 3 mates for a 30 min break as we had been working in the area. I bought a coke and sat down and after 5-10 minutes someone came over asking for us for ID. To add context it was daylight at 6pm, none of us bought anything alcoholic and we had been sat in the corner of the pub causing no attention to ourselves whatsoever. Obviously I was confused so I asked him what the reason was and he said because his managers told him to. Only one of us had ID on us so the rest of us didn’t provide identification. Now in any other pub in the world if you can’t provide identification you should be kicked out, however no one came back for a good 5 minutes to kick us out or anything which was odd. Now the reason was apparent and obvious and it was because we were the only 4 ethnic minorities in the pub. The table next to us were in a state of disbelief as they knew exactly what happened and why it happened and actually even apologised on their behalf even though they didn’t work there. After 5 minutes past I couldn’t sit any longer so I went to confront the original worker and I asked him firstly whose decision it was and secondly what the reason for asking us was. He then admitted that he was one of the managers, even though he said otherwise earlier and the reason was that U18 aren’t allowed in the pub after 8. It was 6-30 and he or any of his colleagues, who were all listening into the conversation, couldn’t give us a reason why we were asked for ID. Now at this point it was blatantly obvious that me and my 3 friends had been racially profiled. I don’t have any problems with getting ID asked for and it sounds like a small thing to get worked up about however for me and my friends to be treated differently to everyone else because of the colour of our skin is something no one should ever have to go through in this day and age or any other. It clearly shows people of colour aren’t welcome or trusted at the pub. Would not recommend going to this pub unless you got the same skin colour...
Read moreUsed to be a good pub where I drank for 18 years. However, the new management has destroyed the traditional local community atmosphere. I've had bar staff regularly steal from me there, suffered malicious rumour-mongering and gossip from landlord and staff. The music policy is unpopular with the locals and most ld regulars no longer drink in The Cross. What used to be the best pint in Caldicot in this pub has now deteriorated. The Guinness tastes like dishwater now. Attempts have been made to turn it into a 'football pub' but have failed miserably. It's a shame that it failed to capitalise on the closure of several other Caldicot pubs and unfortunately I can see this old establishment heading in exactly the same way. The people have stopped drinking in both rooms and now just half-fill the main bar, leaving games room empty, even at the height of the weekend and bank holidays. I have never seen such a dire summer in the beer garden as summer 2013, despite the hot weather. There are other pubs in Caldicot which still cater well for local drinkers and which have gained from the Cross' loss of atmosphere. Perhaps things will change under a new landlord. At the end of the day, a pub I care about is in desperate need of a new...
Read moreBeen a local in the pub for many many years, I have pictures of me in this pub drinking alcohol so explain that?? I have been served by the same staff and landlord over the years probably 10+ infact who know I’m old enough to drink seen my id numerous times over the years also, so I must of just magically gotten younger or was the staff and landlord of this pub was serving me underage all these years?? I am 35 they know this but refused to serve me. The staff member literally a child herself quite frankly has some grudge because she knows exactly who I am as I used to go in there most weekends with a narcissistic ex so explains a lot as to why she gave me attitude. Wouldn’t recommend this pub to anyone unless you want dirty looks and attitude off the staff. Went in other local pubs after this, I didn’t need to be asked for id because they know I am old enough. And to be fair was far nicer with...
