My husband and I went to the newly refurbished Golden Lion as we wanted to support local business. It’s a beautiful pub with a lot of character. When we arrived we saw that the pub had been painted a light cream colour inside, it looked fresh and lovely. There needs to be a sign to say “please wait here to be seated” as we were just stood at the bar like lemons waiting to be seated and wasn’t helped when we went to the bar. Finally I walked around the corner and collared a waiter who then took us to a table. It was a small table which was fine for us, but very very close to the table next to us which had a large number of people. The table lay out in the upper restaurant section wasn’t great and you were made to feel very close to the tables next to you. The waitress took our drinks order and then came back with half of the drinks order. After around 30 minutes I asked again for some water and was then given it. Our drinks were only taken once and if you wanted any other drinks you were made to go to the bar instead of asked by the waiting staff. I thought this was quite poor as in a restaurant you hope to have your drinks brought to you. It wasn’t necessarily overly busy either so I’m not sure whether this is how the pub serves their drinks? We ordered calamari and burnt beef ends to start. It was tasty but the calamari was definitely not crispy enough. It was quite chewy but overall did taste lovely. My husband said the burnt beef ends were very tasty. The mains came and I ordered the ribeye steak and loaded fries, and my husband had the steak with seasoned fries. The dishes came out and were presented well, the steak was cooked perfectly (rare) and seasoned well with salt. The loaded fries however were inedible, truly disgusting unfortunately. They were extremely hard and the cheese was solid. The crispy chicken on top was hard and cold. It was obviously made some time before and maybe heated up but it just caused the whole dish to become very solid. I picked up one chip and the whole dish came with it. I did complain to the waitress and she seemed very put out but did remove the £8 from my bill. My husbands seasoned fries were unseasoned also. The saving grace was the beef dripping sauce which was tasty. The alcoholic drinks were great, they had a great variety and they tasted really nice. The service was extremely slow and we had to ask for our order to be taken, but overall everyone was fairly polite. The waiting staff do need more training as they were bringing out the dishes with their fingers inside the dishes touching the food. They were young lads and were polite but just need more training. It was an overall disappointment evening, which was made more disappointing for us as it was a very rare child free night. I would not eat there again but would have a...

Visited this restaurant recently with my partner for an evening meal. We have been here before, a few years ago and found the food delicious and the atmosphere very pleasant.

Our table was unfortunately in a high traffic area, so the noise was loud for the majority of the evening. I understand somebody has to sit there so we just tried to enjoy ourselves.

I am a ceoliac, so part of the reason we came here was due to the large GF selection on their menu. I also messaged their Facebook page where they said they had gluten free bread. Unfortunately when I came to order the burger I was greatly anticipating I was told it wasn't in a gluten free bun, it was actually slices of bread. I know they did say "bread" not rolls but it is quite misleading when the burgers say Gluten free available. As they are clearly committed to providing gluten free options, it would be really nice to see them add a nice gluten free bun to the menu for people like myself that don't have a choice when it comes to gluten.

We ordered a "Lion Platter" as a starter to share. Unfortunately the waitress didn't communicate this to the Chef so they brought our mains out first. We then queried this so they quickly took the mains back to the kitchen and brought out the platter for starters. The waitress was very nice and did apologise for the mistake. When they did bring out the main course it was still hot however I doubt they did cook it all again.

I did have quite high expectations for this place. Lots of recent reviews saying how great the food was. I had the Gluten free fish. The batter was nice and crispy without being oily, and the fish was very tender. Unfortunately it really didn't have lots of flavour, it tasted like it hadn't been seasoned so without the batter was very bland. My partner had the ribs. He said they were nice with lots of sauce however didnt quite fall off the bone like some other ribs he's eaten. But overall reasonably good.

We had a few drinks before we left, and also couple of mistakes were made here. My partner got served whiskey when requested a specific vodka. This was quickly rectified but then the same mistake was almost made again by a different waitress and I had to clarify.

Overall, we had a mediocre experience, I wouldn't say it was bad but I wouldn't rush out and go back there. We really liked this place a few years ago and it's a shame it didn't have the same ambiance and charm we...

A fairly nice village pub-cum-restaurant, clean and presentable decor and furnishings with a mix of modern and classic features, from the ancient fireplace to the fruit machines. Not overly spacious, but a decent size, sporting 3 areas: restaurant, bar and sports bar. There is also a beer garden and events room (for hire). They do allow dogs in the pub, but I am personally not an advocate of that, being allergic and also from a hygiene perspective due to food and such being consumed and served in that area. Be prepared for a decent wait for your drinks at the bar. Due to the bar staff having to spread themselves between the sports bar and the regular bar, and often times the sports bar takes most of their attention, it can take upwards of 15 mins to get served. Other than those two downsides, the food is very tasty, the drinks are as you'd expect. Staff are friendly enough, and allow for good atmosphere. I believe live music is occasionally played here, which can attract a good crowd. If you're looking for a nice, relaxed evening, you could do worse. Price wise, it's not too shabby. As you would come to expect from a pub...

Passing through from Bristol to Port Talbot and looking for food on a Sunday. Rang through just before 2pm and booked a table for 2.30. Dog friendly. Very clean pub, light and nice decor. Restricted menu but very nice garlic prawns and garlic mushrooms starter. Lovely Savingon. Young staff that served a promptly and politely. Mains were topside beef and lamb dinner. Well we are a fussy pair and love Sunday lunch so are often disappointed when eating out. Not this time! Plentiful portions, beautiful cauliflower cheese and veg, nice roasters, extra gravy and piping hot! Meat was tasty and there was enough of it. All in all I would recommend on a Sunday but will have to return on another day to see what it's like then 😜

Omg… seriously the best steak I have had in a long time. My wife and visited here for the first time on hearing other reviews. We both like a good steak and usually have the ribeye. We both have our steaks cooked differently where my wife has hers well done, no pink, and I have mine medium well. Both streaks were of a nice size and cooked to perfection. The steak comes with a choice of potatoes and sauces. Both with a decent size portion and tasted great. They easily lived up to the reviews that I heard and created the a lovely evening for my wife and I. Service was great and free parking just down the road. Thank You The Golden Lion
