I cannot possibly rate The Wheatsheaf highly enough. I normally write out long reviews but I’m afraid it would take far too long for me to adequately sing their praises, so I’ll keep it relatively brief.
I can say with certainty I’ve never had an experience less than exemplary at The Wheatsheaf. I’m a local and have been visiting particularly over the last 5 years, for a variety of occasions from casual visits, to birthday meals, to date nights; every time has been fantastic.
I can’t comment on the usual drinking aspect but where The Wheatsheaf shines is its food. They clearly pay a lot of attention and care towards their food and it’s evident. My most recent experience was Friday 19th September when I visited with my girlfriend. She had a burger and I had the steak frites, and I’ll comment on my food in particular. The steak? Perfectly cooked, and I really do mean perfect, medium rare as it should be. The fries? Hot, crispy, and fluffy. A great peppercorn sauce and some rocket salad on the side, and I was pleased as punch. Afterwards we ordered dessert and I had the chocolate bread and butter pudding which again, was fabulous.
Something else worth mentioning are the staff, who on my visits have always been polite, professional, and perfectly cordial. On my last visit in particular we were served by a young man who was absolutely wonderful, and by another gentlemen later who I believe is either the manager or closer to that level who I’ve seen on many occasions over recent years, who again was fantastic. While paying I was served by a young lady who mirrored those same qualities. The staff at The Wheatsheaf are an absolute class act!
I’d also like to note, I’ve always booked a table before visiting, so I can only comment on the dining experiences with pre-booking. I don’t know what the situation would be with just showing up, but I’ve booked up to the night before with no issues.
The last thing I’d like to mention is that despite the economic situation we’re living in at the moment, the prices at The Wheatsheaf are extremely reasonable. I paid £46 (plus an added tip, because the staff are wonderful), for two mains and two desserts plus drinks, one of those mains of course being steak. For comparison I recently paid more than that at a restaurant for just two mains and drinks which were nowhere near as good.
I began writing this review with the intention of keeping it short and I realise I’ve not done that, but that’s testament to the great folks at The Wheatsheaf, Magor is incredibly fortunate to have such a...
Read moreBooked a table over the phone for Friday night. Young lad on the phone said it was busy so asked if we could come in early. I said that was fine and asked if that meant we would only have the table for a certain amount of time. He ensured me we didn't and it was just to make it easier on the kitchen staff. We arrived at 5pm and upon arrival were advised by the waitress that we would need to vacate our table by 7pm at the latest as they had a large party coming in. I said I asked this question over the phone and we were advised we would have the table all night and her response was 'well, I've only just started my shift so don't know what's going on'. As it was a special meal we did not want to be rushed and decided not to stay as we would not be able to relax knowing someone else needed our table. Thankfully for us, the Indian restaurant across the road was very accommodating and fitted us in and we were able to stay there for as long as we wanted. REALLY disappointed in our booking and if two sittings are happening customers should be advised at the time of booking instead of lying and saying we would have the table all evening. Would give it one star based on how we were treated but giving two stars as have had drinks here many times before and the quality of the drinks...
Read moreHad a family catch up here on 18/07/24 and booked to eat here. We got served very quickly by a very bubby lady who made my fathers day by confirming they had Guinness 00. After drinks was served our starters came out. I cannot recommend the Korean Chicken enough if you like a subtle spice. And mum had a prawn cocktail which had loads of prawns...very impressive. For mains we had fish n chips, saracchi chicken burger, curry and Guinness pie all cooked beautifully and thoroughly enjoyed by our group. And for desert waffles, brownie and ice cream for just 3 of us, which ended our meal beautifully. The service was faultless and special mention to a young gentlemen who had banter with my dad and said his name was Bartholomew the 3rd lol...he had us all in stitches with his wit and cheerfulness a real credit to the team. Will definitely be returning with more of our family...
