So unimpressed. Only reason they have so many positive reviews is because the manager puts a laminated QR code on the table and asks for a review.
I had the Welsh lamb lasagne. At £16 I was expected a filling and hearty meal but instead I was served what was basically a microwaveable meal. The lasagne was about 75% cheese which was glued to the very hot plate (straight from the microwave). The menu also specified that the lasagne came with garlic bread and a side salad. This is a joke- the garlic bread was just a single slice of the garlic baguettes you get in a supermarket. Not even half a baguette or a couple of ciabattas, it was literally just a single piece of the cheap supermarket garlic bread. The side salad was honestly three or four leaves of salad from a bag.
I think for £16 this is incredibly stingy and if you are going to serve such a measly meal it should be much cheaper. My friend ordered a pie and was equally unimpressed. Nothing felt homemade and everything seemed to be microwaved. There are plenty of better options in Machynlleth. We were drawn in by the vast number of positive reviews but were extremely disappointed. Highly recommend you avoid this place and show some support for some other independent local pubs/eateries that don’t scam their customers with microwaveable food at gastropub prices.
Edit for the reply: lamb - beef. My mistake. I can see lasagne on your website. I can see lasagne on your menu. I can see other reviews mentioning the lasagne. Machynlleth is not a town where there are multiple red lions next to each other. I know where I ate. Nice try! Also just learnt that you have a 2 food...
Read moreThe Pub itself was absolutely freezing, any establishment that serves hot food should to be as cold as this place was pretty much everyone was still wearing their coats inside. The pie of the day was steak and ale and the pie itself was fine but it was served in a bowl not on a plate! It was also served with fries and not chips and there was about 8 fries. Also who puts salad in a bowl with pie, chips and gravy. Definitely not worth the money (very over priced) My wife ordered the butter chicken curry which states it comes with a poppadom when it came to the table it was half a poppadom 🤦🏼♂️ for some reason there was also salad with the curry. Again this meal was definitely not worth the money. Please put your heating on it’s still winter. As for Amy writing nonsense reviews about people with a clipboard, and wearing coats, well she can go and take her nonsense and shove it up her backside. My review is real and not influenced by the owner moaning about a bad review. The pub was absolutely freezing and that Amy is the truth. Comment to the owner about the food was that it was “fine” not “fantastic” like he is stating. Because it simply was fine but defo overpriced for what you get. And I’m right who puts salad in a...
Read moreLooking for a place to have a family meal on a Monday evening meant limited options. The Red Lion, whilst not looking particularly appealing, had good reviews and had options for one of our party who couldn't eat dairy.
Upon arrival, whilst it looks like a pub from the outside, it doesn't look like a traditional pub from the inside, I'm not sure what it looked like to be honest! I didn't have particularly high expectations after seeing the pub but you should never judge a book by it's cover.
The owner Raj, is from India, as is the head chef, so a curry seemed like a sensible option. Welsh Lamb Rogan josh and it was absolutely superb. Something more akin to a very good Indian restaurant rather than a pub.
Some other reviews from our party,
Toby (aged 5) - the food was amazing Archie (aged 12) - my Butter Chicken was absolutely amazing. Far better than my expectations. I mopped it all up with the delicious naan bread.
Raj was a very welcoming host and we wish him all the luck as he continues to make The Red...
