The FOOD WAS REALLY VERY NICE...but MASSIVE COVID/SERVING concerns

I had to open with that, as the meals we had were excellent. Very enjoyable.

After travelling from Birmingham, as we had heard the food was really good, the rest of the experience I found poor, and somewhat concerning.

Here are my concerns:

a) Although sanitisers were available and the spots on the floor were there, and the servers waited to let you through that seemed to be the total thought about the ongoing covid situation. It seemed like a nod to Covid at the entrance and then forget about it

b) Restaurant was pretty packed, no real space to self distance when walking between tables to get in, out or to the toilet. It felt as if it was 12 months ago rather than in a pandemic.

c) Although the servers, when wandering around, held back for you, they often were forced to be closer than 1m at the table due to available space.

d) Our initial drinks were passed over by holding the glass from above, which I don't think is appropriate normally. Given the covid situation, I would expect glasses to either be passed holding the body (not the top) or better still to be offered to take them from the tray. I would not expect someones hand (sanitised or not) to be where I intend to put my mouth ESPECIALLY at the moment.

e) There was a dog in the restaurant, which, to my knowledge wasn't a guide or working dog, although I could be wrong.

On the plus side, we were given a tray with our knives and forks on etc which was placed on the table.

The experience left us feeling very concerned and on edge instead of a relaxing evening trying to help out a local business, keep the hospitality sector going and show our support in our own little way.

I completely understand that this is a difficult time for restaurants but this feels like priorising a little more profit over the safety of the guests.

I am very disappointed in how this was handled.

Would I go there again? Yes, the food was excellent, but only if there is NO pandemic.

Poor show guys and I hope this review helps to alleviate other concerns people might have and is written to help improve rather than just slate what was...

Me and my partner went for a meal at this restaurant last night. We have been there a couple of times over the past 2 years. Last night was unfortunately the worst experience we’ve had however.

Upon arrival we were told that the staff would bring a jug of water over to our table. This never appeared. After 20 minutes a server came over and asked to take our drinks order. We made our order and requested the promised jug of water. 10 minutes later our drinks arrived and still no water. I had to ask for the third time at this point if we could have our jug of water.

This did eventually arrive but only after asking 3 times and waiting for 30 minutes. The annoying thing about this was that a couple that arrived after us were served their water and cocktails before our drinks orders were even taken.

Additionally, we were sat near a large table of diners, around 15 people. This was not a problem as it made for a more lively atmosphere. However, the issue did come from the fact that the staff seemed to be entirely focused on this big table.

We were ignored by staff on multiple occasions, servers at no point came over to ask if we wanted more drinks, nobody checked in on us to ask if we were enjoying our food and after we finished eating, it took 15 minutes for a server to finally clear our plates.

Conveniently enough, the only speedy service we received was when we asked for the bill. Funny that.

All in all not a terrible experience as the food was very tasty and the drinks (when they arrived) were good. But Ego seriously needs to look into the way their staff service people.

Even when there is a big table to focus on, that shouldn’t come at the expense of other customers.

If I’m paying a £70 bill for a meal and one drink each for just two people, I expect at least to get a...

The service was good, friendly staff and helpful about my nut allergy. The venue was pretty, clean and well laid out which was lovely. However the food was very bland. My prawn cocktail starter was sloppy, the bread wasn’t toasted just a cold piece of bread and my partners starter was extremely spicy despite the menu not stating it was spicy at all. Our mains took a long time to come out. When they did my partners was missing his potatoes that camr with his meal and were brought over 8 minutes after. My meal was wrong and was given vegetable paella not chicken. Which after realising 5 minutes into discovering there was no chicken in my meal the waitress came over and said i had been given someone elses food. This is also not good and not safe when I made it clear I had an allergy. As vegetable paella wasn’t checked as nut allergy for me, the chicken one was. When my chicken paella came, it was very mediocre. It wasn’t terrible but it wasn’t good. Rice was very hard, cold and bland. The inside was hot but the outside was very cold almost like it had been sitting there a while. My partners veg was hot but only due to the sauce. His pork was cold and there wasn’t much of it. All i can say is thank god we had 50% off mains because i wouldnt be happy paying full price for what we had. Due to this we decided not to stay for dessert which was disappointing as we love a dessert and it was my boyfriends birthday. Being big foodies i was disappointed. We aren’t from the area and visited because online reviews were great but overall the food...

Visited as a birthday treat, easy enough to book for a table of 2 on a Monday evening. We arrived around 7pm, a fair few people were already dining but not too busy at all. We were shown to our table and given waters and our drinks orders taken straight away. We ordered our meals and we're warned that there might be a small delay to the food as we did not order starters. This was fine and we were pleasantly surprised when our food arrived around 10 minutes later. Food was delicious, I had the halloumi kebab and my partner had the lamb something or other. We both ordered a side of fries (which as lovely as they were in hindsight probably weren't needed!) nd enjoyed our main meals. Despite being pretty much full we did also order a pudding - myself the lemon tart and my partner the salted caramel tart. Safe to say we returned empty plates - yum! Only slight complaint is that it was quite difficult to pay for the bill. We did ask for the bill which arrived not long after however we waited and waited and waited for the waitress to return so we could actually pay. Other than this everything was lovely!

Having been to Ego numerous times before last Lockdown brought that to an end, I was looking forward to going again with the Supper Club group I belong to. I'm sad to relate that the food side has slipped. Myself and one other had the lamb rump, which has become a favourite of us both at another local, family run establishment with superb outside eating which has become a regular haunt since outdoor eating came in. Ego lamb rump was sadly disappointing: overcooked (not pink), tougher and less taste than consistently achieved at the other venue. Course grain, cheaper cut of meat not so well cooked. The ladies who had the chicken dish were happy. One lady had Paella and found it was "disappointing; too much rice, too little interesting content and too expensive for what it was". We didn't complain, but probably should have. Service and presentation were both fine. Ego has been on our regular list of local venues. It comes off until we hear some positive reports from diners we know. A shame, as it is a pleasant venue. Hopefully standards will return to where they were; we shall try it again then.

Decided to book for our anniversary and went on a Tuesday which is ‘Steak night’ prices were fairly high but we hadn’t been before so didn’t know what to expect in terms of portion and quality. We both had lovely starters and both had the 227g Sirloin (8oz) which comes with skin on fries, grilled mushroom, confit tomato and ‘dressed’ rocket. My wife doesn’t like mushrooms or Rocket so asked if there was a possibility of exchanging these for a small side salad, the answer was no, we don’t do that but I can see if we can do some cherry tomatoes. The meals arrived, both had very nice steaks and the fries, mine had a small pile of naked Rocket, one small flat mushroom and half a warmed mostly raw tomato. The other plate had one tomato (two halves) again slightly cooked and were positioned in Way most phallic which I’m certain was deliberate. As I say, the Steaks were very nice but I expected better.
