Our first visit to the portabello was one of a mixed reception. We were a party of more than 10 so it's no meant feat to accommodate that to begin with. The lounge had a lot of space and was comfy enough too. We weren't cramped at all and the speed of service at the bar for drinks. was a reasonable standard. The food was great and priced fairly. The service was good too and the 12 meals all came out together after not having to wait too long. The tables could have been cleared a little faster after our main, but not too shabby on the whole. Now unfortunately the reason it's only a 3 star and not a 4 star review. We parked on the car park and made the mistake of entering through the bar door. I must say, I've never felt a complete room of eyes stare at me and my companions that hard since back in the early nineties as an English man in a North Welsh pub. Me, my other half and her son found the door at the other side of the bar and walked across towards it and it fell eerily silent...as if the regulars had been kept captive for years in there. However, once in the lounge, the quite unnerving welcome was shrugged off and we got on with having a great time. Unfortunately, my other half's sister and her family fell to the same plight as us and while she waited in the bar with the kids (while her chap went in search of the lounge) she was subjected to leering looks and harassing comments such as 'oh look at her with her come to bed eyes, I'd give her one'.... The typical kind of thing you'd hear in the 70s where a pack of neanderthal males need to show each other they're worthy of their group membership, while knowing full well they'd not stand a chance down to both their looks and their limited vocabulary... You get the gist. So, to sum up, if you want great food and good service at a decent price, walk through the lounge door and receive it in spades. If you want to know what it's like to play Nicholas Lyndhurst's role in goodnight sweetheart, walk through the...
Read moreHad a 70th surprise Birthday party booked last weekend for my Mother in Law. It was booked since January with the owner. Arrived to set up on the day with a car full of food and decorations and the function room we booked was already set up for a 16th Birthday. Spoke to the owner who initially said there was no record of the booking. Upon searching her messages eventually found all the messages my partner had sent. Then tried to say well the other party has paid the deposit, to which I then quickly pointed out that she told is not to worry about the deposit and pay on the day! In the half an hour or so I was there trying to sort out the mess, at not one point did the owner apologise, not once... and at several times just wandered off and left me standing there while serving other customers without even saying bare with me or anything. Now I appreciate mistakes can be made, and the 1 star review isn't necessarily because of the mistake but due to the appalling customer service from the owner. Upon having to ask what she was trying to sort out, she said she was trying to see if any other pubs in the area have function rooms free. I then had to point out that there is a couple of hours before people arrive and there's no chance of communicating this with 50+ people coming from all different areas! Was made to feel like it was US that made the mistake and we were a total inconvenience to her! Eventually negotiated to have half the pub and managed to pull the party off but with little to no help from the owner. Even served me later on at the bar and still, not one apology. Certainly wouldn't book anything there again, not because of the mistake but the awful...
Read moreMe, my partner and kids went here for dinner and the food was standard although we had to wait for practically an hour for our food to come out. Very rarely seen any staff about behind the bar so was a struggle to actually catch anyone to speak to. We waited for about 15 mins to try catch someone to ask to order pudding but didn’t see anyone to ask so I popped my head in the kitchen door to ask if anyone was working out in the bar to order pudding, the lady kitchen staff as very rude with a reply of I don’t know I’m working in the kitchen but said this with a snotty attitude. Probably didn’t like that I stuck my head in the kitchen door but I had to to get to see a member of staff. Didn’t end up ordering pudding after that poor response. Safe to say will never go back there again and will be telling people not to waste their time...
