Abingdon was a quick overnight stop on the way back to NC from a family event; my wife, three kids, and myself. When googling restaurants we noticed that a lot of the local restaurants looked great but not kid friendly. There were a few games on we wanted to watch and luckily we searched "sports bars" and found JJ's.
I called and got Steve on the phone, who set the tone for this entire experience. First things first, no one is ever attentive enough to answer menu questions over the phone. And when those questions are about non-alcoholic beer options, no one ever knows the answer. But Steve did, explaining both options (which are great!), and never seemed in a hurry to disconnect. He let us know that they were family friendly and they'd love to have us come by.
The hostess was incredibly accommodating and despite it being a busy Saturday night got us sat quickly. Danielle, our server, was super knowledgeable and friendly and everything came out quick and hot. The potato skins, which are skin on wedges smothered in cheese, were absolutely incredible....as was probably the best house made ranch dressing I've ever had in my life. Danielle let us know that all of their dressings are made in house except for the French. We were fine with that; if you're ordering French dressing you likely deserve store bought anyway. The pulled pork nachos were great as well, tons of tender pulled pork and more cheesy goodness. The appetizers are also an extremely generous portion for the price point, which is a recurring theme.
I had the "Special Burger" and had to tell Steve that in our city we have award winning burger houses that don't out-burger that burger. The pimento sets it off and the patty is clearly fresh, as we were told 99% of the items in the restaurant are. Perfect cook on the burger as well. The spaghetti with meat sauce that my son had was "perfection," his 14 year old words. My wife loved the Southwest Chicken Salad and again, homemade dressing! And my 4 year old almost finished his gargantuan portion of kid's mac-n-cheese which is not in fact kids mac-n-cheese but delicious adult mac-n-cheese that they charge $5.00 for.
From Steve, to Danielle, to the hostess, to the awesome bartender who accommodated my bizarre sports request and threw it on the main screen for us...to the food, ambiance, and prices- this place is an absolute diamond in the rough. If it hasn't been on Diners, Drive-ins, and Dives yet...it's only because it's way too cool of a spot for Guy Fieri to step foot in.
5/5 stars, 10/10 points, 100% recommended. Don't miss this spot if you're in Abingdon. And thanks to the whole team at JJ's for turning an otherwise super stressful Saturday into a great mini-vacation with that...
Read moreI went with five other people recently. They all got burgers, well done. I ordered the grilled sirloin, medium rare, with french fries and grilled vegetables as sides. As a bit of an appetizer, I got a side salad, at about $2.95. It was your basic house salad, with lettuce, one little onion ring, croutons, cheese, carrots and a piece of a tomato. I got the housemade chipotle ranch, which was delicious! However, that was a 99 cent salad with a $2.95 price tag -- it was minuscule!
As for the sirloin steak -- like I said, I ordered it medium rare, but it came out overcooked. The waitress offered to have a new one cooked, but I declined. Because it was almost well done, the steak lacked flavor despite the pat of garlic butter on top. To say that was disappointing would be a massive understatement. However, the grilled vegetables were good.
Try or pass? I say try. I'll be coming back. I will never, ever get another steak from here, though. Next time, I'll probably get a burger and ask for it to be medium well. That sirloin steak was insanely disappointing. The next day, I got a properly cooked bone-in ribeye at a different establishment, which made me almost forget about this fare at JJ's.
Regardless, I'll return and try a burger. The waitress was okay. The service was about average. 2.7...
Read moreWe were looking for a bar to have a night cap on our travels through, from Tennessee to the 7 cities area of Virginia. We looked up what was open and nearby and couldn't have been more pleasantly surprised. It was near closing time and unbeknownst to us we were greeted by the one of the owners outside with such a warm welcome and a "come on in". Everyone at the bar was warm and welcoming. The bartender was just wonderful. He was an expert at his craft and just a delight. The menu had far more than your traditional bar fare so everyone could find something they enjoyed AND at 10 minutes before closing we were able to order anything from the menu. I had a veggie sandwich packed with roasted zucchini, roasted red peppers, mushrooms, spinach and onions with just the right amount of mozzarella cheese, it was absolutely DE-LICOUS! We had a "Car Bomb" as everyone was having one when stepped in the bar so we decided to try it and that was awesome. If you do not know what a Car Bomb is, stop by and have one! It's that good. All in all, it's a great place to stop by on your travels and a great place to plan to go. We will be back!😊...
