The reality is I do not like having to write this review. Have always liked Rain on my visits to Abingdon.
We were a party of 4 and to be honest everything was good. Service, food, etc. That was until I noticed that my $50 steak was cooked well done. A little disappointed at this point, but surely they would correct the issue. Showed the server the steak and without hesitation he said it was over cooked. He took the steak with him and we all assumed I would be getting another steak. I told him to just put the new steak in a to go box because everyone else was finishing up eating. The server showed up with the box very quickly and I asked how did he cook the steak that fast. He said the overcooked steak was in the box. Why?
Next……a person comes up to the table that I did not know with a nonverbal expression of an attitude on his face. He did not introduce himself, but it was none other than the owner. He immediately starts talking to me while the table is listening about “lighting” and how the steak can appear to be over cooked. Basically, talking to me as if I have never eaten a steak or cooked a steak. There was also clearly miscommunication between the server and the owner because his comments did not make sense. Other people at the table tried to correct him with facts. Did not matter.
Needless to say my reaction to his behavior was quite nasty. Have never had an experience in a restaurant like that. The owner had many options on how to handle a clearly overcooked steak and chose a route of what felt like belittling a customer instead of admitting the mistake and working together for a solution. Trying to force a customer to pay for an overcooked $50 steak is not a solution. Neither the server nor anyone at our table thought the steak was cooked properly.
We usually come to Rain atleast 2 or 3 times a year when we visit. Spending several hundreds of dollars. Needless to say we won’t be back. My apologies to anyone that had to observe this experience because it did get heated quickly, but hopefully they learned to spend their money elsewhere. Customers...
Read moreWe came to rain for my grandmother’s 80 birthday (7A, 2K). It was awful. I made this reservation over a month ago and did tell the restaurant at the time I had 2 small children. When we get there, they did have 2 high chairs as requested but no coloring books and crayons, when I inquired, we got expo markers and the back of an old menu, fine, I’ll make it work. On to the next… Our server didn’t even come over once in 15 minutes since we sat down, seemed really new at his job as he didn’t offer us drinks, appetizers or anything, we had to tell him. The service from the get-go was very slow. It took about 30 minutes for appetizers, salad another 15 after that, then another 30 for entrees, all with little interaction from our server and no offers for additional drinks. We did flag down the manager multiple times who was extremely rude and snarky towards, myself, my elderly grandparents and my mother, totally uncalled for as we were polite. Now, my toddler did cry at bit at the extended wait times. She was tired and done and food still hadn’t shown up. My husband took her for a walk and not even 2 minutes after he returned with her, she cried because she had to sit down again. This lasted for 2 minutes, the chef/owner comes barging out the back and screamed across the back of the restaurant at my elderly grandparents to “take the kid outside”. We were all taken aback as she had already stopped by the time he came out. He could have politely come over to us, pulled us aside something, no he screamed at us. When we complained.. We were told by the manager to “read the room” and calm the kid down. She was totally calm and coloring at this point. Needless to say, service wise they really sucked. On to the food… The food was good but WAY salty. The salmon my grandmother ordered was dry and overcooked although it had good flavor, maybe the chef let it overcook when he was yelling at us. Only highlight was that the wine was cheap.
For a $500 dinner, I expected better and I’m extremely...
Read moreNormally I would give Rain 5 stars for their food. It was my favorite place to eat in the tri-cities. I made a reservation for 4 for my birthday. Unfortunately it was never confirmed as they do not have “ open table” or other reservation service availably online. My reservation was a message left on a machine. I was concerned because I had not been called back. This is complicated by the restaurant being closed Sun-Tues and open only at night. I made three additional calls but was unable to get through because of bad weather and my call being dropped . Foolishly I came on with the guests I was hosting only to find out I had no reservations at all. The young receptionist was polite and tried to find a place for us. She said if we waited a half hour in the bar she thought she could seat us. We were a bit disappointed but ok with waiting. The next thing we knew a very loud and clearly angry woman came over to our table and started yelling at us. She identified herself as the manager and informed us that she takes her job very seriously and we did NOT have a reservation. As she got louder and louder I asked her to please lower her voice and she informed me that was just the way she talked. Instead of apologizing for the mixup in a quiet and kind way, she just kept justifying herself louder and louder. We have never been treated so rudely much less in a public place. After she left the bar table where we were waiting our appetites were nonexistent and we quietly left. My husband did apologize to the hostess in case she had. Thought he had been rude when asked if the staff checks their messages. I would like to say I will be back but I would not consider it without a heartfelt apology for the way were treated. Bye bye wonderful bananas foster cheesecake with the caramelized bananas . Bye bye skillet cheese appetizer served with bread that we loved. Bye bye cool place where we liked to take our guests. We will...
