My wife & I went for breakfast on a Saturday. It was full, but there was no wait. The hostess walked us into the dining room, pointed to the opposite wall, across an ocean of full tables, and said, "Number 42," referring to a numbered table tent, and walked away.
We sat at the table, twiddling our thumbs for five minutes or so before a young boy (maybe 12 or 13) who clearly had no interest in being there on a Saturday morning approached with a deadpan "Y'need menus?" followed by "Whaddya want to drink?"
Despite the less-than-effervescent staff, the atmosphere was comfortable with lots of interesting decor and a low din of a hundred other conversations. We definitely got the feel that Youngblood's is a regular spot for many of the diners.
The food was pretty good. I had planned on trying the chicken-fried steak and eggs that got such great reviews, but ordered an omelet meal instead. The meal size was hearty, and the omelet was very good, with a large helping of filling. The hashbrowns were -- well, just normal, everyday diner hashbrowns. The disappointment was the two biscuits and cup of gravy that were part of the meal.
Granted, we were late in the breakfast rush, at 9 a.m., but the biscuits were cold and hard. The gravy had a great texture, but the only flavor we could detect was what we guessed must've been bacon grease. No pepper, no sausage bits, just a smooth, cream gravy with that faint mystery flavor.
The price was very reasonable at $22.73 plus tip for breakfast for two. Overall, while this particular visit was just "meh," there's something about Youngblood's that hints that they have some standout dishes. It doesn't surprise me that they've received exceptional reviews.
Qualifier: Our early first-visit impression was set by the indifferent hostess and sullen busboy(?) -- and all restaurants are severely understaffed in September '21 -- so the balance of that visit would have had to be stellar to overcome that. It's a place that I think we would visit several times if we were local, I think, for different meals before a...
Read moreReally good prices, really fast service, large portions, tasty food, and free dessert. You cannot go wrong eating here. We checked out Youngblood’s Cafe because it was mentioned by Texas blogger the Day Tripper, who travels all over Texas in search of hidden gems. I have to say this place lived up to the hype. We were all pleased by the service and food. Walking into Youngblood’s Cafe makes you feel as if you’ve stepped into a true Texan eatery. Kitschy Texas decor is everywhere and you know a restaurant is good when the place is packed. We arrived around lunch, we were seated right away, and the food arrived almost immediately after we placed our order. I had the Cajun style grilled catfish and I was happy with the level of heat and flavor. My meal came with a choice of soup or salad and I opted for the soup of the day - Navy bean soup, which was delicious! Other dishes ordered were the chicken fried chicken and Vicki’s Chicken Fried Steak. I have to say, I was curious about tasting Vicki’s Chicken fried steak because green chili sauce + gravy sounded strange (never had chicken fried steak this way before) and I was really surprised how wonderful it tasted. I would definitely recommend this dish! And finally, as we were finishing up our meal, a server carrying a huge platter of banana pudding dishes swung by our table and asked us if we wanted dessert. Overall, this restaurant was a huge hit with all of us and if I’m ever in Amarillo again I’m planning on stopping in for another...
Read moreNot impressed with this place. I had hopes for here but my first experience wasn't too great. Maybe it was the wrong time for breakfast or maybe just an off day. Ill give the benefit of the doubt. But ...
Ordered two breakfasts. Omelet was not an omelet but just some veggies with an egg pancake on top. One set of hash browns were perfect while the other was undercooked. The sausage was too salty, and the rest of it tasted like it had no flavor or seasonings at all. The biscuits were fine but the gravy was awful. Tasted like somebody got confused on their recipe between white and brown gravy. Waitress said they used the bacon grease as the rue.
The drinks, the one hash brown, the pancake was great and the salsa for the omelet had some nice flavor. The waitress was friendly and helpful. Asked if ready to order almost as soon as i sat down, felt like she was in a rush a little bit and didnt really give some time to look around the menu a bit.
I love how they remodeled the place and now it has a cute little shop off to the side. The western vibe is perfect as well as the fireplace they added to the front room with all the windows.
Maybe ill give this place another chance sometime seeing as there are alot of...
