What a disappointment. We saw long lines at the food truck in Yuma and decided to visit the restaurant. We came in on a Sunday at noon. More seats were empty than full, they had a limited one page menu, and were informed by the little girl, who did a fine job waiting on us, that they were out of brisket and several sides, including beans, collard greens, and french fries. Management should ask themselves how they can be out of sides and BBQ meat at opening on a weekend? I guess they don't have the smoker onsite or running daily? I suspect that's the case as the ribs seemed to be reheated or overcooked. The bones were soft and edible, if you like that. The BBQ sauce was cold and poured all over the ribs. The sauce should be on the side so you can choose because good smoked meat should stand on its own. A better sauce can complement the meat without drowning it. The Mac n Cheese and slaw were good. The bacon in the breakfast bowl was undercooked. They appeared to be short on staff, but managers were onsite talking to locals and not attending to details that could have prevented the problems we encountered. They should probably stick to the food truck. We will definitely not be returning and would not recommend it.

The Smokin' Hen House is about 20 minutes outside of Yuma, you can either take Highway 95 or S24 to get there. Their located inside the Hidden Shores Resort. If you're looking for more than just great food, the resort gives you access to its boat launch for $15. That gives you access to the boat launch and the beach. There's no cost just to visit the restaurant. The Smokin' Hen House is family owned and operated. The recipes are a combination of their family's recipes and the creative minds of the family matriarch Mama Cheri and her kin. The Smokin' Hen House received the Yuma's Best award for catering. They're known for their ribs, chicken and their signature Texas Twinkie (stuffed jalapeño wrapped in bacon). Aside from amazing barbecue, they also offer some incredible desserts like homemade pie, and a variety of cheesecake bites. Now, if you're the type that likes a little sweetness with their Guiness, ask about their float.

Edit 22 Sept 2024: Long-term business travel down the road at Yuma Proving Ground. Great spot! Owner (Frank) was super friendly, food was good, good brews on draft, out-of-the-way place. I would recommend calling ahead to make sure Frank is operating. But it’ll be worth the drive!

First time in Hidden Shores (another review😎 is needed for the park 👍) Thanks to my BFF who invited me for the weekend to visit her "happy place" . Of course one's got to eat, there is one restaurant on the property The Hen House, WOW OH WOW!!!! I am not specifically a fan of BBQ places but Everything about The Hen House including the owners, the staff and the FOOD oh my the food. You enter the restaurant, right away feel welcome😀 the decor is warm & inviting to enjoy a wonderful meal but also have a great time with the family or/and other patrons. Now I know why this is my friend's "Happy Place" Now the food!!🥓🍗🥩 I am kind of a health junkie so I didn't know what to order the first time around, well Johnny took care of us, he is not only part of the family, he does genuinely listen to what his customers like or don't like. Gives suggestions and will customize your order to YOUR want and he does it with a fabulous sense of Humor. Every plate can be prepared to YOUR taste. My first meal there was fish & chips, the fish was cooked to perfection, the batter was crispy but not greasy at all, the chips were also a delight , fabulous first impression. The next morning, we came for Breakfast, a lot of choices available. We both chose scramble eggs and hash brown. Everything was cooked just right, eggs were perfectly seasoned, Hash Brown cooked just the way I like them, crispy and not greasy at all, served with a homemade biscuit that melts in your mouth (no butter needed) Our next meal wasn't any different, every item we ate was absolutely delicious, a MUST have when you visit The Hen House, their smoked chicken served with Homemade Mashed potatoes that have so much flavor that you will want more and take some home and another item you absolutely need to have is the Coleslaw with Apples. The best Coleslaw you will ever have... Of course every good meal need to end with a sweet, fabulous desert, The Hen House will offer you just that, a succulent list of sweets but my Favorite was the Caramel Crust Apple Pie🥧, this apple pie is one that you will remember, The crust is made right there at the restaurant fresh each day, the combination of apples, caramel cooked on this fluffy, crispy crust is absolutely the perfect marriage of textures and taste. Highly recommended. Attached a few pictures of our meals and meet Johnny, our fabulous host. Also important news, the restaurant will soon be selling jars of their own BBQ sauce that is also a...

My husband and I are currently staying at the Yuma Proving Ground military campsite, so we decided to give this place a try given its close proximity to the base. The first time we ate here, was for lunch. We shared a 3 meat platter with 2 sides (brisket, hot link and chicken and mac n cheese and apple slaw). So, let's begin with the positives. The location is very nice, right by the water, but we do wish that they had a couple of picnic tables available for outdoor seating. As for the indoor seating area, the restaurant is nice, clean and set up like your average BBQ joint. All of the staff from the owner to our server were very friendly, welcoming and attentive. Of the meats, we both liked our brisket the best. Perfectly seasoned, tender and pulled apart with little to no effort - as properly smoked brisket should be. The chicken was a bit on the dry side, but had very good flavor, so I'd be willing to try it again to be fair to the cook and the owners. The sausage was meh so-so. I hope that they consider adding quality beef hot links to their menu. I LOVED the homemade apple slaw, but they really need to scrap their mac n cheese recipe and try a new one - the words bland and blah quickly come to mind. They were out of homemade potato salad this visit, but we will definitely try it next time. I almost forgot! You have to try their stuffed jalepeno poppers aka texas twinkies! They are double wrapped in bacon, stuffed with cheese and any meat of your choice - then smoked! Absolutely delicious and dangerously addictive. So, the big question everyone is waiting for - will we eat here again? Absolutely! Next week as a matter of fact. Highly recommend that you give them a try! You won't be disappointed.

In closing, to the local idiot that wrote a negative review claiming that she said no pork - but then demanded bacon & sausage for her order - be kind and go grow...
