As someone who grew up in New York City, I was a bit skeptical when Firehouse opened a couple of years ago. I needn't have been though.
I'm a regular there. And although the bread isn't anything like the amazing fresh Italian bread I grew up with (sorry, nothing I've ever had in Texas comes close), their white or wheat is fresh and tasty.
I love their meatball sub, probably the best I've ever had in Austin. Their corned beef/pastrami Steamer is pretty good too. The only thing I ever had that wasn't that great was one of their steak subs. They steam pre-cooked "steak" and it's not what you want. You want a "steak" grilled.
Service is always excellent and they have one of those computerized drink machines that gives about a thousand choices. They have a really good cherry lime-aid (you squeeze your own fresh limes into it), that's awesome.
I'm a regular and get "rewards" so that I get a free sandwich periodically. This particular shop is owned by an awesome young blonde lady. You can tell when she's working there also, she's really fast and sharp at the register. Definitely worth a visit for...
Read moreI have been eating here for years and I've met the owners multiple times. They are great people and they run a great ship here. However for the first time I am disappointed in the staff. I want to know is there any reason the person in charge cannot give me a small cup instead of a miniature cup for my two kids meals I ordered to go? Out of the hundreds of dollars I have spent here what is the problem with giving me an extra 10 oz without charging me or a regular combo meal which the guy was going to do even though it was a kids meal. Stores staff have done this for me on their own and even the owner has done it in the past. Which I greatly appreciate. Now if we were eating here I wouldn't care if my kids got the miniature cups because they can refill them as many times they want which is usually once. But on a to go order there should not be any problem giving small instead of miniature cups kids meals. Honestly it is almost enough to make me not come back to the store. And I have eaten at every single one of this franchise owners scores. There is a difference between good business and being...
Read moreI had 2 subs here in the last 2 weeks. In each case the subs were excellent. Well made and consistent. Firehouse offers a great selection + 3 size choices for individuals. More than most sub shops. Also they have a really great line up of chips and a soda machine that vends many choices. Taken together for flavor / quality this beats most of the offerings of many shops. Yes their pricing is a bit higher than others. If you are flavor conscious and want selection they are a top choice. The service is fast, and the team is well staffed, polite, the place is well kept. Your money buys something better than you will find elsewhere. If you are price driven over quality & choice, you can save $ and get the standard fare of 5 or 6 sandwitch choices in 2 sizes, paired with 3 - 5 lower tier chip choices and a standard line of 5 drink offerings. You will often find lower staffing, longer wait lines, and the storefronts are less well kept with...
