It's a wonderful thing to find a neighborhood restaurant you love and can return to over the years We've been regular customers since Flores was located at 290W and William Cannon maybe 20 years ago. Their cuisine is excellent, but visiting the restaurant at the new location on William Cannon and being pushed to sit in the noisy and uncomfortable sports bar instead of the dining room became really annoying in recent years. Covid introduced us to doing take out, and we grew to prefer doing that. We miss the days when we knew our wait staff and manager (and they knew us) and had an actually enjoyable experience in the dining room at the restaurant, but those days seem to be behind us now.
We typically order our favorites and order (AND PAY FOR) a large order of chips and salsa. Large order of chips usually came in two small paper sacks, but the last three times we have only found one little bag when we got home. Portion size has also become inconsistent. We try to be understanding because of the difficulty restaurants are having in finding good help these days, but our recent experience has had us considering alternatives.
On a positive note, Flores makes the best chips and salsa we've had anywhere and their enchiladas poblanas (my favorite) are one of the very best recipes to be found in any Mexican restaurant in Austin. Kudos to their kitchen staff!
For the quality and value of the cuisine alone Flores deserves five stars. We keep looking forward to the day we can depend on getting home with everything we ordered and paid for and we continue to return every two weeks, even though it has recently seemed to confirm Einstein's definition of insanity ( doing the same thing repeatedly and expecting a different result). We sincerely wish Flores Mexican Restaurant well and good luck in developing and maintaining staffing to support a positive customer experience in a trying restaurant environment, and hope our loyalty will eventually be rewarded as we continue to patronize Flores, even though recent experience has tested...
Read moreThe meals were great but the soggy, greasy chips and the horrid service gets this place one star. While trying to enjoy a nice evening with my dad, I ordered the chicken burrito (comes with tomatillo sauce) however received the steak burrito (comes with Tex mex sauce). Not a huge deal, I assumed some sort of innocent mistake was made so I brought it up and asked for the correct meal. 5 minutes later somebody else (I assume the manager - they never introduced themselves) came by with the exact same plate I had just sent back and tried to give it to me. I told the man no, and that (again) I had ordered the chicken burrito so he (seeming pretty confused) took it back. Within less than a minute he brought back the same plate and said "hey this IS a chicken burrito" but I had pointed out that there's Tex Mex sauce and chunks of beef all over it to which he quickly interrupted and said "no, I just cut it open and there's chicken". I quickly replied (a bit agitated at this point) that the chicken burrito comes with tomatillo sauce and doesn't have chunks of beef all over it and to please just get me whatever is on the menu (because that's what I ordered). The guy interrupted again and asked, "so you just want a different sauce?" to which I again (actually mad and mildly confused about why this is even happening in the first place) said "NO, I just want what's on the MENU" so he then just left without a word and my original waitress quickly brought out the correct meal. The meals were great! We were quite surprised because last time we went the food was awful - unfortunately the bad taste that was left in my mouth after the interaction with the gentleman (which we received zero apology or acknowledgement) completely ruined my mood and I wasn't able to eat much. Oh well - that's what leftovers and...
Read moreUsually don't post negative reviews but this situation rubbed me the wrong way.
Called ahead and made an outside reservation for a large party. When we arrived they decided to split us up between two large benches that were probably 8-10 feet apart. Didn't ask if that would be okay at any point, just assumed we'd be okay split up. So instead we decided to move way into the corner as to be out of the way and moved a small 2 person bench table next to a large one so everyone could sit together. I've never been at a restaurant where moving a couple of tables for a large party so everyone can sit together has been a problem. Or if it was, they would tell you that your whole party wouldn't be able to sit together when you make a reservation.
Regardless, we got a "talking to" for that by some angry looking manager. He actually dragged the table by himself 10 ft back to where it was and said "don't move my tables, they're wobbly" (they're not). This wasn't a busy night (a Wednesday), there was no purpose in not letting us have the table even if he had some issue with "his" tables being moved, it was just weird. They were forcing us to either sit smashed together (which we ended up doing and had no eating or elbow space) or be split up. No conversation for 2 people with everyone else, fun!
The least accommodating manager for a large party that I've seen. We tried to be nice after that, making sure to thank him and his staff each time they came with something, we were all on one check, tipped well too, but the manager had a scowl on his face the rest of the night. We had wronged him and his 2-seater bench table that night and there was no going back. Speaking of not going back, we won't be. There's better Tex-Mex and certainly better...
