=== Update ( Halloween 2025 )
The next time you have an unexpected early closure, could you please email your newsletter distribution list?
That would save everyone lots of time and gas. Just between the time I pulled up and left five others did as well.
Update:
Hissy Fit is now running dinner specials that start at 5:00 PM. Tonight’s: a delicious Shrimp & Grits. Grits had excellent flavor and consistency. Shrimp was perfectly grilled, not overdone, with a medium-spicy delicious red sauce.
Grilled green beans: I ordered a side of grilled green beans for the first time. It’s an excellent veggie side dish; maybe the best green bean side dish in Austin. I was certain it had miso paste in it because I tasted so much umami. The kind server asked the chef who said it was a caper-mustard dressing. I need to steal this for Thanksgiving and summer guest cooks.
Thanks Hissy Fit for a great dinner.
Totally enjoyed all 4-5 visits to HissyFit. Best aspects:
All dishes had high quality ingredients, were thoughtfully prepared and plated. 7 of 8 dishes I’ve tried were completely delicious.
It’s an awesome place to have breakfast, bring a laptop and work for a couple hours. Wifi is lightning FAST. (200 Mbps-ish?)
Beautifully designed interior (see pics). Very comfortable. Quiet place to work or talk with friends.
You order and pay at counter. A server brings food to your table. EVERYONE I’ve interacted with at this restaurant was wonderfully polite and kind.
Fave anytime dish: Deviled Eggs + Fried Oysters
Tried and enjoyed all these in this order:
Deviled Eggs + Fried Oysters
Breakfast Burrito + a side of avocado (last pic, loved the flaked sea salt touch)
Quinoa Bowl with salmon added
Pork Carnitas Sandwich Duck Confit Sandwich
Roasted Cabbage Salad Bowl (was good but not great. All...
Read moreWe will not be returning. It is a nice looking place but the food is just okay and the service is non-existant. Did not feel like I got my money's worth here. I ordered an app, 2 sandwiches, 2 sides, and a dessert. My total with tip was, embarrassingly, more than if I had gone to the nearby Brazilian steakhouse. I had the grouper sandwich, which was a bit over cooked (chewy) and messy but mostly tasty. My wife had the Cuban which was overly grilled so the ham was hard in some places. We had the smoked fish dip app, which is a southern favorite of ours in other places. Here it was made with smoked salmon, not really appealing. The brussels were good if a bit on the oily side. The mac and cheese had a runny sauce but was sorely lacking in cheese. It did have some raw veggies in it for a nice crunch but they cooled the dish off so it felt more like a pasta salad than a warm mac and cheese. The crayfish in it were well cooked. We were divided on the biscuits but we both agreed they were a bit over done. I liked them (but then I love all biscuits, really) they reminded my wife a little too much of freezer biscuits. The service was the worst fail of the evening. Apparently you can only get your drinks refilled if you go to the bar. Most of the staff refused to even acknowledge my presence and the person I was told was the manager decidedly avoided me. Note that they only had three tables seated. We ate our app with no drinks. I had to find some kitchen staff to get drinks. Even then no one returned to refill our drinks. To be fair they may be having staffing issues. The one staff member who would talk to me (not the person I was told was the manager) said that two people had called out and that they were mostly a counter service place with limited bar service. Rather crummy given how elegantly the place is decorated and the cost...
Read moreWhat a wonderful addition to the neighborhood! My partner and I tried it for our Valentine's Day dinner after hearing local buzz from our neighbors, and it was a great choice. The food was great! My partner got the fried chicken sandwich and fries. He raved that it was "solid" and appreciated the use of dark meat. I snagged a bite, and I loved the crispness of the breading. I opted for the weekly special: meatloaf and sour cream & onion mashed potatoes with a wine pairing included in the meal price. It was delicious, a great value, and I love having the "experts" choose for me! The space felt cozy and was decorated nicely with warm lighting and comfy tables and booths with a beautiful color palette and textures throughout! Service was equally impressive, as they went above and beyond to accommodate our requests. Everyone was extremely kind and friendly, the type of people you hope you run into in your neighborhood. You order at a counter and have a seat, and they bring out your meal to you.
The Arboretum neighborhood could use more gems like this. It's a must try! The price range is on the affordable side, with most items under ~$20. They operate with a counter service model and do not take reservations given the counter setup, which makes sense. Parking is conveniently located right outside the entry door, so you won't be traveling far. I noticed a few outdoor seats, but on a cold drizzly night like tonight that wasn't something I paid much attention to, so we opted for the ample indoor seating. We can't wait to go back and...
