My previous experiences with Julio's was limited to takeout. We would order a roasted chicken, tortillas and some salsa to make some tasty tacos at home. It wasn't until recently that I dined in the actual cafe. There are a few of things you should know before heading in - it is cash only (there is an ATM just outside the main entrance, but it charges $3.50 per transaction), parking can be a bit tricky due to limited space and finding a table can be just as challenging. It just isn't a huge establishment. Once inside, the menu is fairly one dimensional. Most items have some sort of Mexican food variation on chicken, with vegetarian and beef showing up as minor menu items. The chicken is really good. Aside from the aforementioned 'homemade' tacos we would put together at home, the chicken enchiladas and chicken fajitas were pretty good. Nothing spectacular, but good. The queso is a bit boring, with too much of the small bowl filled with sliced jalapeno and red peppers rather than warm delicious cheese. The guacamole has a nice consistency, but was a bit on the bland side. The rice and refried beans are standard fare. All in all Julio's is a nice experience, but the prices are a touch high for what you get in return. It is worth visiting from time to time, but I wouldn't make it part of my...

I can not say enough great things about this Austin treasure. I go out of my way to eat there or pick up food. The food is delicious, they have an extensive menu, options for everyone. The feeling of the restaurant is laid back, always has been but they recently did a refresh. Important to say that with the subtle changes, this still is very much classic old Austin.

Today I made a point to go for pick up. The staff is always very friendly. A young lady was tending to the restaurant like it was her home, in a very welcoming way. My order was quick and I was walking to the door when another woman opened the door for me. It is the kind of place you want to go to often so they know your name.

I love supporting a local business, I believe this is family owned. I highly recommend them for great food and customer service. Small floorplan, easy to navigate. Sweet patio that gives a view of local foot traffic. Breakfast to...

Pros: Affordable

Good salsa

Great location but the its being put to waste by the current Julio's :(

Cons:

I was very disappointed. It was more "American" than Mexican.

Poor service. You place your order at the register before you seat yourself.

You don't have a server to check on you to see if you need anything not even to refill your water....

THEY ONLY ACCEPT CASH which is sketchy just like the neighborhood.

There is an ATM but it charges $3.50 for a transaction!!

"Queso" = store bought velveeta cheese dip

Rice= white with a splash of color die

Chips= store bought white flour

Nachos= The cheese was shredded cheddar and white cheddar cheese which was gross and chunky The chicken tasted freaky too.... The only thing edible: beans and chips.

I would not recommend this restaurant to anyone and would not revisit. It needs bette quality of food and better customer service...then I might think...

This is in the Hyde Park and Hancock Park area of Austin. So beautiful, fun and retro. I visited during the week during the lunch hour rush. The place was hopping busy, but I was still able to find a seat in their cozy and energy filled dining room. They also had an outside dining area option that would allow you to enjoy the neighborhood vibe. The atmosphere was very welcoming and the food was very good. They took my order in a timely manner and my food was served within minutes. I ordered the chicken quesadilla with spanish style rice. Both were delicious and the serving size was appropriate for a lunch meal. I'm not a big fan of food coma serving sizes. I prefer smaller portions with an emphasis on quality not quantity. They even appear to be dog friendly.

Service was friendly but slow. Came in around dinner time so that's more than understandable. The food wasn't anything remarkable but it wasn't bad either. I don't plan on coming back especially since what I paid in total definitely didn't match the quality of food that I received. The rice was a little bland and most definitely could've used more seasoning. The fajita taco was the same as the rice but the portion of it was bigger than your normal taco. The beans were good along with the enchilada. I did also order an a la carte chicken quedsdilla and that was good. Again not bad but not great. My 3 star rating comes primarily from the friendly service and the really good strawberry margarita I had. If I were to rate the food on its own I'd say a star and a half.

The atmosphere is chill and laid back. The photos around the place are really nice. They have a small coffee bar that you serve yourself. They only offer milk and creamer. I ordered the migas plain with flour tortillas. The migas come with tomatoes onions and cilantro. The tortillas in the migas were nice and crispy but cut way too small. The egg to tortilla ratio is way off. Too much egg for my liking. That being said the flavor is ok. The portions are quite large. The salsa is not good. It’s just tomato sauce it’s not spicy at all. I found a carrot in there, I thought that was weird. The fruit that it came with was delicious. Nice and ripe. The coffee was also good. It was super fresh.
