Read moreWe just found our new favorite restaurant in Austin. I've eaten a lot of sushi. I got used to having high quality sushi nearby while living in the Bay Area (CA) and traveling in Japan; but when I moved to Austin I struggled to find a good spot with tasty fish and good nigiri/sashimi. Most of the places I've tried here rely on having "unique" rolls rather than focusing on fresh, tasty fish and composition. After being disappointed by numerous restaurants here I now reluctantly buy sushi from HEB whenever I accidentally go to the grocery store hungry.
I randomly met the Head Chef of Tatsumi (Elvin Jin), not knowing he ran Tatsumi and he told me to come try his restaurant, and that I wouldn't be disappointed. He was absolutely right; this place is an absolute knockout. The atmosphere is casual, with a very unassuming outward appearance. Walking in you're met with hip music and a homey vibe with a sushi bar presented towards the back wall. The ambiance is well done and not overstated or hokey. We'll definitely be sitting at the bar next time we visit.
I came here with my girlfriend and while looking at the seasonal fish menu struggling to decide what we want, Elvin suggested letting him pick. We agreed and had one of the best Omakase meals we've ever had (this is after going to the famous Sushi Suite 202 in Chicago last month)
We ordered the shishito peppers and some pork belly bao. Both were fantastic, but I wouldn't order the bao again simply because it filled up too much room that I wanted to spend on sushi.
Elvin brought out a wine pairing for the meal then served us the following course (one or two may be incorrect/out of order, I tried my best to take notes):
"Starters": Some cold dish, I think it was scallops? Kama Toro (fattier cut of Tuna) sashimi
"Medium": Muke Hotate (Jumbo Hokkaido scallop) sashimi Kinmedai (golden eye snapper) Kanpachi (great amberjack)
"Heavier": Escolar Yuki Masu (snow trout): Umi Masu (Tasmanian ocean trout) King Sake (salmon) belly Otoro (Fatty Tuna)
Then we finished off with wagyu sashimi topped with 24K gold flakes (pictured). This was one of the best meals I've ever had and I can't wait to go back. Sushi holds a special place in my heart and Tatsumi (and Elvin) managed to give me everything I wanted and more.
If you're looking to eat top tier sushi in Austin, go to Tatsumi. The chefs are fantastic, prices are very reasonable, and Elvin will treat you...
Read moreOne of the best sushi restaurants in Austin! My friends in SoCal think I'm crazy when I tell them how great some of the sushi restaurants are here in Austin but a few of them are very legit and can rival and sushi restaurant in the country. And Tatsumi is one of those.
It's in a very unassuming area of town that you could easily pass by. In fact, we were going off the car GPS and ended up driving a complete circle around the place before we found it. But you can see it from the main road if you know where to look. We came in on a Friday with no reservations and we were able to get a table, but it does look like it fills up quickly. We were only two so best to make reservations if your party is bigger.
The inside is quite beautiful and the staff were very nice. Again, not having a reservation, this was not a problem for them and they immediately seated us and soon after, someone took a drink order from us. Since we had never been here before, and to make a fair comparison, we ordered some of our usual favorites: Seaweed Salad, Nigiri (Hamachi and Toro - two pieces per order). For rolls, we had the Mountain roll and a Gary's roll.
For starters, they brought out the seaweed salad with the nigiri. I would have expected the salad first before bringing out any of the food items ordered. The nigiri was epic! The fish was so fresh, it practically melts in your mouth. Very generous portions. For the Mountain and Gary's roll, I took the recommendation of the server and they were both fantastic. Leads me to believe the other rolls are equally fantastic.
Amazing restaurant. It would be nice if they brought out the items separately. There is no reason to bring the salad out with the sushi. Starters and salads should be brought out first. Seaweed salad is such as basic dish and yet this wasn't very good. Too soggy and they use a slightly different dressing. And we wanted a Philly roll but they do not carry cream cheese. I'm well aware that cream cheese is unheard of at a sushi restaurant in Japan. But also something you won't find at a sushi restaurant in Japan is a California roll and they have two varieties of California rolls here. You can get a Philly roll at the top sushi restaurants in the U.S. Too bad they choose to not serve them.
Bottom line, this is without a doubt one of the best sushi restaurants in Austin and probably all of Texas. Just make sure to ask them not to bring all the...
