To start the experience off.... this place is in a seedy area with a variety of people that visit this establishment. I am always up for a scary experience in search of some amazing food. This was not the case, This has to be a family run business because everyone is Hispanic and old and look related and hardly speak English. They all seem to be miserable and they do not greet nor hardly even speak to you unless your ordering, I can deal with that if the food was good but I have given VICS 3 chances and they have failed every time. The pictures from the website are inaccurate, I ordered a brisket and sausage sandwich and within 3 hrs was on the toilet sicker than I have ever been. I have a co worker who frequents this place and she has never experienced any issues so I decided to try it again maybe it was because I came in late and ordered the sanwhich. So the 2nd time I went in I ordered the beef ribs I did not want the sides because it did not look up to code... (health board inspection code)... so I passed and they said I would have to pay more for just meat??? This made no sense but I again just went with it...$15 dollars later for two beef ribs is not what I call reasonable, so that immediately got me annoyed with the situation the cashier is an elderly Hispanic woman that snatches my card and then gives me a pen...Get this they actually have a line 4 a tip??? What for poor service to shuttle threw a cafeteria line and people giving me attitude like they are paying me to eat there...I obviously didn't leave a tip ate the first rib and it was greasy... very greasy... but decent certainly not 7.50 a rib good 3rd and final time pork ribs same poor customer experience but these ribs were less greasy and ok but I got the plat threw away the sides paid 11 dollars and got 3 small pork ribs... Long story short... over priced poor service and questionable food...stay away from the...
Read moreYou get two complimentary slices of white bread per plate, but you are charged $.10 for each additional slice! Talk about cheapskates...who does that? I'll tell you: Vic's BBQ does that! Canned vegetables, commissary-made potato salad, Elgin Myer's sausage, Faux flavored instant banana pudding and average brisket at best. They get one star for their amazing pork steak! More than once I've seen rodents running along the baseboard in the bathroom from the holes in the wall. The men's room has a toilet almost flush with the wall, so unless you're a left leg amputee, good luck with that! The worst customer service in Austin and that starts at the top with Vic and his wife, Isabelle. Vic's rude sister-in-law, Irene, runs the register when she's not sitting in front of the TV watching "The Walton's." Only family members are allowed to touch the money in the register and their other employees are treated like second-hand citizens. No excuse for this kind of service but you have a biased, narrow-minded owner who has his entitled son and sister-in-law as employees. The son used to park his hot rod right up front taking up a prime parking spot while customers are forced to park by the street. I was a regular here ten years ago until Vic fired his lovely and personable sister-in-law, Sylvia, who would always welcome the patrons and make you them feel welcome. He then threw her under the bus and bad mouthed her in the dining area for me and others to hear. Read the rest of the one star reviews...it's no coincidence!! If you want good BBQ in SE Austin, Donn's BBQ is a few miles away from Vic's on the northbound frontage road of I-35 between Woodward and Oltorf next to...
Read moreEating out on your lunch break is not always the easy. Your time and choices are constricted. There are a handful of barbecue joints that I can make it to within reason. Vic's BBQ is the closest one. The first and only time I ate there was right after I started working for Progressive Insurance. I remember it being decent, but some of my co-workers swear by it.
When I got there, the parking lost was packed. Every time I drive by it, it looks packed. Is that supposed to be a good sign? Inside there were people but not as many that the parking lot would indicate. The atmosphere had a working class feel to it. Everyone in there seems like they were on their lunch break between jobsites. I ordered the three meat plate with the usual meats of moist brisket, pork ribs, and sausage. I got coleslaw and potato salad on the side. The brisket was surprisingly decent. It was very tender, and the smoke ring and flavor were superb. I did not need any barbecue sauce for it. The pork rib was tender but not falling off the bone. The rub and smoke gave it nice flavor. The sausage was probably one of the better commercial sausages I have ever had. It had the just right amount of fat. The casing and grit of the sausage was on point. The coleslaw and potato were bland. Nothing special to write about.
It is a solid barbecue restaurant. It is definitely worth a visit. It is relatively cheap, and they are pretty quick in getting you in and out. Vic's is barbecue for the everyday working man. Going into this visit, I would have guess I would have given them a lower grade. I was...
