It's kinda hard to rate this restaurant to be honest. I'll start with the good stuff and that is the food. The Barbacoa here is awesome and the whole menu is a reminder of what used to be in Azusa that was Carmen's if you know it. Home style cooking at its finest as if you miss your mama's mexican cooking just stop on by here. I have lived nearby for years, driven by this place for even longer and never been inside till it was recommended by my uncle. I mention Carmen's because it was our favorite for years since we came here from Mexico and this place is definitely a reminder of that. Now a couple things to mention that might be considered bad but I say it's room for improvement. There's no restaurant out there without cons to their pros and I'll try to be as fair as possible.
The service itself can be great although I like one lady who we always try to get to serve us for her charming personality and she takes care of everything I always make sure to leave a hefty tip. It can be slow sometimes to get seated and served, technically you can just seat yourself where you like but it's confusing to stand there and not know their process and it takes just as long to get noticed when you're seated so that can be something to improve if possible.
BE WARNED this place is closed probably more than half the time. Especially on Sundays, I'm confused if it's open for breakfast and menudo then they close for the afternoon and evening or if they are completely closed but it seems that half the time that we drive over to see if it's open it's closed which is unfortunate. Maybe it's for religious reasons to close on Sundays but I would definitely like to spend my afternoon or evening after church there. It's generally confusing and uncommon for restaurants to close even later during the day on Sundays which are high time for eating out with the family. The silverware and drinking containers and plates and whatnot could also be improved or changed. Unfortunately I've had to send back cups they give me for being broken or chipped which is odd. It's understandable if they can't afford to change out everything but I would definitely feel out of place when given stuff like that to eat or drink out of anywhere else so it's not just here. The decor is okay and definitely feels a bit like home but with some of the home style renovations needed are included with less than desirable seating and tables and whatnot. I guess that's enough of the cons and bad mentions here but honestly... I can live with it. If this place were open more often I'll definitely spend more time here. I love my barbacoa there, don't tell my dad but it's better than his birria lol Me and my family would love to fill that hole that Carmen's left us and replace it with Guadalupe's if we could. The food hits as close to home as possible and could very well be the last authentic Mexican home style cooking left out here! Definitely give this...
Read moreFirst and last time here. This place has a lot of potential but not there currently. Should've drove away soon as we parked and saw the cook in his old brown Honda Accord with clear light in the parking lot hawking mucus from his nose! You g waitress was friendly enough, until my Asada wet burrito came and I noticed that it wasn't asada inside but another beef, it was cooked with veggies as if to be used for multiple dishes, and there were no rice or beans inside this burrito. Waitress was hard to find even though it was relatively empty. She said burritos don't come with that, and I shouldve said something. ?? It's a burrito. Of course it's standard. My date ordered menudo, and it wasn't the best for sure. Soup was thick like they cook the maiz and meat together instead of separately like it's supposed to be made the right way. That was a clear sign they cut corners here. My date asked about their margaritas and waitress sheepishly said they use wine based. That's not a margarita then, why even have it on the menu?? Top it off, the cashier or maybe she was the owner, came to our table when we arrived, and we asked if they had some dish, she said no but then starting naming 2 nearby restaurants and recommended we try them and that they had her favorite this and that. ?? Shouldn't YOUR place have your favorite this and that? Very surprised to hear her say that. Again, we shouldve took it as a sign and left before they put complimentary chips and salsa that was clearly just CANNED whole peeled tomatoes with some chopped onions and cilantro added, gross. Their menu is so massive, confusing, hard to read in their dim lighting paired with burgundy menu highlighting and black letterhead inside the highlighting. Smh. Decorations in my opinion are overly done and could use upgrading. This could be a go to spot to watch sports, as they have big screen TVs, but they forget to turn up the volume that's instead muted. Again, lot of potential, but far from it when we visited our only...
Read moreWent there for the first time and I'm going to say most likely the last time. The service was great, very nice people. Unfortunately the food lacked in flavor and authenticity. The only thing that didn't need salt was the salsa which seemed overly salted and as if it came from a can. My wet burrito sauce was watery and had really no flavor. The meat was a little dry for being shredded pork stewed in sauce. Their mole was not mole and their al pastor was not al pastor. If people have been coming here for years they simply haven't made it past the city lines of Azusa or perhaps we went on a off day...either way it's surprising to see it has 4.5 stars as that just seems wrong. But again the waitress and staff were nice and that sometimes...
