There are so many small, local ice cream shops in this town and Durbin Magic Freeze is one that's offering tasty treats at an affordable price! You can't miss this small ice cream shop as it's sitting right on the corner of a busy intersection and there's always people outside waiting to get some ice cream. They offer a variety of rotating flavors and offer everything sweet from dipped cones to root beer floats! No savory foods sold at this ice cream stand, just sweets! Their flavors are common ingredients you would find at most other ice cream shops but you can't beat them on price! We were greeted, not once, not twice, but three times! The service here is attentive and they seem ready and happy to help. Atmosphere sticks to it's classic roots just like most all other businesses around here and they even have an ice cream cake shop right next door! Overall, this place was nice to try out and see what the hype was about. I would definitely come back here.
I got the s'mores cyclone and my wife got the second to smallest cotton candy cone and our friend with us got a vanilla malt shake. I'm not sure what I was expecting but the way they do their s'mores is different which I appreciated. The ice cream was a milk chocolate base with marshmallow fluff mixed with it and instead of using graham crackers, they used waffle cone pieces. My cyclone was topped off with whipped cream, chocolate shavings and a cherry on top. I really liked it but it was more of the consistency of a shake than a cyclone or blizzard or mcflurry or (insert snowy adjective here). Still good nonetheless. I tried my wife's cotton candy cone and it was a custard base and it was a very rich and tasty ice cream with a balanced cotton candy flavor. Our friend said she really liked her malt but I didn't get the chance to try it.
You should definitely support this small business if you're in the area and don't have much to spend. They have a variety of sizes as well so if you want to go small, you can, and if you want to go all out, you can!

Read moreFour generations of my family have been coming to Durbin Magic Freeze over the years. Dan has always been great. We stopped two nights ago (Friday) and asked the young girl at the window about a specific ingredient in one of the products. She said she didn't know and stood there. When my husband said it was important to find out because of a food allergy, she closed the window, walked away, and when she returned, she repeated she didn't know, but said it probably has it in it. My husband stood there with her staring back, thanked her, and left. She then proceeded to take the person in line behind my husband. We chose to not purchase what might not be allergy friendly and picked up dessert from Giant Eagle instead. I called twice on Saturday requesting to speak to Dan. Each time I was told he just left but would be returning soon. No one offered to take my number or a message for him to return my call. Instead of calling a third time, we drove over in person to make Dan aware so he could take the opportunity to coach the employee on customer service. We were told he would not be back until the following day. We will continue to try to speak to Dan (owner) directly to make him aware of the situation. I trust he will handle the situation appropriately. In the meantime, Welch's, Skoops, Sweet Frog, and Menchies have all been spectacular when it comes to working around allergies and reading product label ingredients rather than being dismissive. So for now, they will get our business....

The staff was incredibly welcoming, patient, and friendly!!
Where Durbin misses the beat is in its flavors: The vanilla didn’t have a strong vanilla flavor, more like plain milk.
I got pina colada custard and it was PINK. A pink pina colada?? I 100% thought it was strawberry when I got it, and told the staff I was supposed to get pina colada and they responded “that is pina colada”. Awkward! Absolutely NO pineapple flavor. My mom said she tasted coconut, but I wasn’t even sold on that. Thank goodness they have VERY CHEAP PRICES so I didn’t feel that bad throwing my cone away. Maybe I should have sampled first, but wow not at all what I wanted or was expecting. Maybe watch how you label your flavors? @ Durbin
Again, I was wonderfully impressed with the low prices! Muuuuuch better than the $5 a cone places in other towns.
Overall, I would like to give them another try if I’m ever in the area, but I would not drive 35 minutes again.
That being said - if you’re reading this, please give this small local business your support! Post reviews & comments for fellow readers and to redeem their reputation in my mind / eyes...
