I ate here during my stay at Lost Pines Resort, and overall I would say that the food is good but not superb. The buffet included various barbecue choices, a pretty nice salad bar, beans, mashed potatoes, cornbread, oysters, and shrimp. The brisket was flavorful when paired with the barbecue sauce, but it was a little too thick and chewy for my liking. The sausage was better; it was very hearty and filling. The mashed potatoes were light and fluffy, and the beans were also pretty flavorful. Though it wasn’t much different than most, I did enjoy my salad. After you finish your meal, there is a large desert table right in the middle of the buffet. From cheesecake to cookies, brownies, and parfaits, this table was packed with delectable treats that my mother enjoyed. The employees seemed happy to be at the Heartwood Cafe, and they proved to be very helpful and friendly. However, after paying for the buffet, which is about $40 per person, a 20% service charge was automatically added. This presumes that the service will be excellent; the service was great, but there shouldn’t be a 20% “pre-tip”. Overall, the food tasted great, there were a lot of different options, and the servers seemed to love their job.

Breakfast here was disappointing. I ordered the eggs Benedict, but the ham looked fake, the egg was hard-boiled instead of poached, and the dish was barely warm. My husband, ordered the avocado toast had the same issue with the egg—overcooked and lacking in flavor. Even the cappuccino was off, with cold milk foam.

We shared our experience with the waiter, and the manager kindly comped our meal, which we appreciated. However, for a resort with premium prices, the food quality felt more like fast food—if not worse. This place could use a...
