If I could only eat at one place until I died, it would be Bergeron's. The daily menu changes are refreshing while making each meal feel special and unique. Something as simple as pot roast on a bed of mashed potatoes sounds tasty in practice, but you can genuinely taste a passion and precision in every bite. The textures are just so. The flavors mingle and play well. The sides are appropriate and traditional. But what shocks me most is just the raw creativity.
This is someone who not only knows food, but is intimate with it as though it were a favorite nephew or beloved grandparent. By this, I mean it's that warmth and connection you get with a special time with their presence. That's is how this food feels.
The employees there are very optimistic. There's no plastic forced niceness. They're genuinely happy to see you and greet you like a proper Southerner. They chatter about their favorite dish with you and how the chef tried something different this time and somehow made it better. They know the food. It's silly, but it keeps coming back to me as something akin to a family reunion by taste.
What shocks me most, though, is much of what I eat there and what is made - in its aesthetic, in its scent, and in its flavor - is amazingly priced. It's less than $15 for a warm meal master crafted and almost by contradiction served like a school cafeteria, with someone preparing your plate before you and being equally as empassioned as you about your meal.
Bergeron's is lightning in a bottle. It's a perfect blend of so many positive things, and in my mind no words can do it...
Read moreI had a girls lunch there on Thurs. April 18th, 2024. We arrived at around 12:45 pm. This was the first time enjoying lunch there. We were very impressed! There was plenty of seating, the earlier lunch crowd had thinned out! Now, after tasting their offerings, I know why it can be crowded sometimes! I tried the Pecan crusted salmon, pasta w/parm, and the fresh squash. It came w/a piece of really good french bread. You do have a choice of several sides. Everything was delicious! One of us tried the stuffed bell peppers, which 2 were put on her plate(a whole pepper), which she raved over! You also have a choice of teas to drink. The price was just under $20 dollars! A bargain for a great lunch and a drink! They were very generous with their portions and were quick to serve you with a smile! In fact, every employee was very cordial! After lunch, we did purchase a dessert to go, the chocolate strawberry shortcake & a buttermilk pie! The shortcake was a delightful twist, the buttermilk pie tasted so very close to my great grandmothers recipe! I also took home a pint of the Shrimp and Crabmeat Pasta Sauce to try! All I can say is "you got to try this!" Absolutely the best sauce I have had! I wish I could keep it a secret to serve to company, and pretend that I made it! So, run don't walk to Bergerons City Market! You will not be disappointed! They have "to go" plates if you are in a hurry! The menu changes daily, the market is full of wonderful treats, both frozen and fresh.Even great wine selections! Lunch is from 11am - 2pm. Can't wait to try the...
Read moreI was impressed again with my food at Bergeron's City Market.
I had the fried fish and fried shrimp. The breading/batter on my shrimp was a little clumped up in a few areas of the shrimp, like they were ganged up in the fry basket, but the texture and flavor was very good. The fish had a corn meal batter which was crispy and seasoned just right. I liked the two different batters, corn meal for the fish, flour for the shrimp. My sides were cabbage which had greens and sausage in it. The cabbage was fresh and not over done. The macaroni and cheese was obviously homemade with a Béchamel sauce, and spiral noodles. I generally always get the tossed Green salad, which is in a creamy vinaigrette. I added a little salt for my taste.
The shrimp creole was good. It was homemade and had a great taste. The bland white rice really stole from the red gravy flavor. I will say again the dish was good. It was so good, I bought some of the same red sauce for the house. These are only small things I thought of while posting this.
The stuffed bell pepper had a crawfish stuffing which had gobs of crawfish. It was all thriller and not much filler. The bread pudding was excellent.
I will be back !! I enjoy having fresh homemade food ready to eat !!! And even bought Togo stuff to cook at the house
I forgot to mention the homemade tartar sauce is zippy and I love it ! The cocktail sauce was...
