We have driven by Charlie's many, many times on our way through Bayboro. We decided the time was right to stop and give them a try. We really, really wanted to like this place. We really, really didn't. The only thing worse than the food was the service. First, I ordered unsweet tea, because I cannot drink sweet tea. What I got was tea sweet enough to give my great grandchildren diabetes. Things did not improve from there. While we were looking at the menu, our server asked us what she could get started for us. I asked her to get me the she-crab soup started while I finished looking at the menu. My wife asked for the seafood chowder and the Watergate salad while also continuing to look at the menu. While our server went to get us some hushpuppies, we decided on our main meal. When the server came back, I asked for the country fried steak (white gravy), deviled eggs, and French fries, with gravy. My wife got the grilled cheese. Approximately 20 minutes later, our entrees came. When I asked about the soup, we received a look of confusion. My country fried steak clearly came out of a freezer box, the white gravy from a can, and my frozen French fries with brown gravy were cold. I literally ate less than a third of my steak and fries. My wife's alleged grilled cheese was two pieces of Walmart toast with un-melted cheese. She sent it back, and it came back less than three minutes later with the soup. They microwaved a grilled cheese sandwich. Don't get me started on the deviled eggs...the spelled deviled wrong, it should have been spelled the vile eggs. I did not finish those either. Something to know, when you order a "cup" of soup, you are not getting any thing resembling a cup, you are getting a ramekin with one cup of soup by volume. The she-crab, wasn't bad, but the seafood chowder was abysmal....Wait, I forgot the Watergate salad....so did they, twice. It too was virtually inedible. Needless to say, no "to go" boxes were requested. Maybe the most telling, the lovely woman who checked us out didn't bother to ask us how everything was...as a matter of fact, no one asked us how things were, not even once.....Do yourself a favor when you drive by Charlie's,...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreMe and my grandma come here very often and it has NEVER been this bad service wise. We walked inside the restaurant at 1:45pm and didnāt get service until 2:15pm. We finally got our food at 3pm. They were very short staffed, there was only one waitress in the entire building. She apologized for the wait multiple times and I donāt blame her. Whoever was in charge messed up somewhere somehow. Not only was the service bad, but as soon as we got our food we realized we didnāt have any silverware. So my grandmother stood up and asked them at the counter for silverware. I cannot make this up, the lady behind the counter told her to just grab some off of another table that didnāt look like they needed them. How absolutely unprofessional. It seemed like a very stressful environment with the singular waitress being very frustrated and other workers in the restaurant being unbothered, with one of them even saying in front of all of the customers, āIm going to go smoke a cigaretteā. At least, I personally think, we shouldāve been discounted on our check because of the wait. Thats the least you could do. But at least the food...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreDrove from Greenville, NC to pick up my aunt in New Bern to take to Charley's for lunch. Before being put in a retirement facility, she went to Charley's regularly. Now, she does not have a car or a way to go. She likes to meet her friend Nancy who eats there almost daily. I have done this several times and the food has been good and the service also. Not today. A group of four came in behind us and waitress took their order first. Very slow to bring hushpuppies, had to be reminded. (At 11:30, they were not that busy). When we got the menu, prices had increased about $4 since last time we came. I ordered Crab Cakes and, when I cut into them, they were bigtime overcooked. When tasting them, they were cold and so where the french-fries. Nancy asked waitress to send it back to be reheated. We waited about 15 minutes and Nancy asked where my food was. (the others had almost finished their meal.) When they brought the crab cakes back out, they were overcooked even more this time. Seems like service has really gone down hill since the last time we were there about two months ago. I will not...
