Updated review- Sadly I'm dropping the review from 5 to three. Idk if they were having a bad day or what but the fish curry this time was bad. I asked for medium spice instead of spicy so that I could get the flavors more forward over the heat. Last time it was SO GOOD I wanted to appreciate the flavors before the heat kicked in. The flavor was more tomato forward and the sauce was more watery than a thick, smooth curry. This time bits of tomato and jalapeños were clearly evident. Like they didn't let the curry simmer long enough or let the tomatoes become jammy before adding water they also didn't let simmer down into a sauce. And the depth of flavor I had last time just wasn't there. I even asked the server if they gave me the right curry, and was assured it was the correct items though maybe the cook was different?? I wouldn't think the different spice level would effect the taste that dramatically, because if I'd had THIS curry last time, I def wouldn't have been back! 😮💨 And I was very much looking forward to it! They were very good about it and offered to make something different or remake the same dish but I declined these things as I'd hate to be disappointed again if their other curries turned out the same. They also took the curry off the check. So don't not go based purely off this review... just maybe dont expect consistent results? 🥲 I am updating the post with the pictures of the second curry by comparison.

JUST GO! The food here so so richly flavorful and spiced as desired. I ordered veg pakora, fish curry, plain Naan, to eat in. The server was kind enough to give me a sample of their veg soup, which is something I'd never try myself but I actually loved it! It was corn based but not overly corn-y with a velvet texture (but not too smooth like creamed corn is). Now it's something I'd like to try to make at home! The pakora was crispy and yummy, and the serving was just huge! Plenty for three to share so for just me it was more than enough. The fish curry i asked for extra spicy because the Portland pallete is... lacking. And they delivered! It was delightfully spicy but still so so flavorful. The fish was tender and light and the curry sauce was literally liquid gold! I could eat it alone with Naan all day. The serving was generous of fish and sauce. I had enough for leftovers, big enough to share (but you wouldn't want to!) The basmati rice was mostly perfect, there were a few hard kernels I bit into but other wise paired with the fluffy Naan and fish curry beautifully! The Naan was enough for one, fluffy, warm and not burnt. I ordered some of their veg soup to go- as well one of their desserts and extra Naan. The food came out promptly, and you do pay at the front so you don't feel rushed to finish. Bonus points for plenty of napkins at the table. Will update about the dessert I ordered! But yes I highly highly recommend this place. I waited a while to visit and it did not...
Read moreAfter having a delicious lunch at Chettinad three times, it seemed like an easy decision as to where we would celebrate our Indian-born son's 40th birthday with 40 people. Bala, the owner, sat down with me and helped me figure out everything and promised he would make this a very special event. And he was true to his word. This past Saturday night, Bala and his staff prepared a fantastic buffet of Saag Paneer, Chettinad Lamb, Chicken Makhani, and Navratan Korma, along with garlic and plain naan. There were plenty of the various chutneys and of the sambar. We started off the meal with samosas and a dosa cart and those were a huge favorite, especially because many of the guests had not had dosa before. Our guests enjoyed watching the dosa be made right in front of them as they waited. Everything was absolutely mouth-watering. Additionally, as requested, Bala made sure there was plenty of mango lassi and Kingfisher beer. And, at my request, having lived in South India and traveling there for 34 years, masala chai was served as well; it was the best I've had in Oregon, tasting just like what I love in Tamil Nadu. (However, a cautionary note: as in many Indian restaurants now, the chai at Chettinad is not normally sweetened first as it is in India because many Americans do not like it like that; I asked for it to be made just as it is in India and I was not disappointed!) Every guest who drank the chai said the same thing, that it was the best they'd ever had. I had asked Bala to make sure there was plenty of food for everyone, including enough for people to take home. People were very appreciative of having that option, too, as they raved about the meal. The staff was very attentive, making sure we had plenty of food and having all our needs met. They did all this though their dining room (our party was in a separate but adjacent room) was full and customers were waiting to be seated. This restaurant is obviously doing something right! I live in Portland with five Indian restaurants within a fifteen minute walking distance of my home, but I will definitely be taking myself and my friends to Chettinad more often. Also, its South Indian choices are not often found at most Indian restaurants. I also want to add that because my son is a wheelchair user, this was an ideal location for many reasons, including because of its accessibility and the accommodations the staff made in the room's arrangement. Thank you, Bala and Prakash and Vijay and the rest of your staff, for the great food...
Read moreThis might be a big review but it’s genuine review and I don’t want someone should have bad experience with this restaurant team… Extremely bad customer service and worst behaviour and false commitments. First experience- Went for a breakfast and order my favourite paya soup and also appam with egg masala. They came with items to server and said sorry sir we don’t have nalli paya soup but we have chicken paya soup or you ok with it 😂………….I was upset that they should have mentioned it before they came with dish to my table… I was so hungry and no option and had to go with it. Chicken paya soup is so bad 🤮.. but Appam with egg masala was good.
On Friday 09/30 for dinner went with family to have dosa. While taking order they mentioned due busy timing and more orders dosa might take for 50 mins 🙄… disappointed but completely understand and went for other options. Order chicken lollipops, Hyderbad goat biryani and veg munchuriya, naan and kadai panner. Veg Manchuriya was good but other were so bad. I thought Hyderbad goat biryani was dum biryani? At least during placing order as a customer point of view, they should have mentioned it, understood as it’s my fault that I did not checked while ordering.. ☹️.. They completely forgot to server naan and kadai panner until we asked for it…. But still the Kadai panner sucks.. and no option as we were hungry had little …. On same weekend (today during lunch time) we again thought to visit to have dosa this time. To make sure, I did called restaurant and they confirmed that dosa is available (also said - they are very famous in dosa’s 😂😂)… in next 10 mins we were at restaurant for dining. While ordering dosa they said “Sorry sir no family dosa or dosa’s as we are very busy” same dialogue which they told me on Friday…. I was so angry and frustrated because, 10 mins back they confirmed on phone that its available and they are famous for dosa….😡…. When I ask for this question there was no response and they showed irresponsibility or negligence towards customer. No option we had to leave restaurant and the person who answered my phone call was at desk and he was so rude and unprofessional attitude (May be he was a owner or someone).. no one tried to convince or apologise…..
Will never ever go to this restaurant again and I will strongly Not recommend this restaurant… as no tasty food items, irresponsible and very bad customer service, repetitive mistakes and...
