There's a lot of promise. The lounge is easily the best part. The melding of the themes, the overall design, the cameras looking in on the games, and the food/drink are amazing. That whole aspect of Portal Adventures is top notch and definitely makes it a great place to hang out.
The actual escape room side of things was a bit disappointing. The general concept of the Portal organization tying together the rooms is neat. However, there wasn't much about Tomb of the Gods that stood out. The puzzles were pretty straightforward, the rooms weren't particularly memorable, and the immersive element was missing. Nothing was bad, but there are a lot of rooms in the Portland area (and specifically with a similar theme) with more to offer.
On the positive side, Sam was a really great game master. He helped a lot when one of the puzzles wasn't working, and gave the right amount of guidance throughout. You could tell he was really enthusiastic about what he does.
The biggest critique I have is that Portal Adventures does not have any interest in small groups. My Wife and I had actually been keeping tabs on when this location would open so that we could be there day one. We have done 50 rooms across the Portland/Vancouver/Clackamas area and this one was opening right next to our house and looked really promising. When we went to book, we saw that for groups of 3-6 (2 wasn't even an option) it was a flat rate that was equivalent to paying for 6 people. That is just completely unfathomable for the group of three that we have done most of these rooms with. I reached out to ask how this could possibly be the case, as I have never seen that significant of a requirement before (I've seen a couple that require 4 tickets be purchased). The response was: "This is due to the scale and large size of our adventures compared to other escape rooms. We've created some very large, custom theatrical sets for these adventures that require a great deal of coordination, and as a result require more players to solve. These adventures were designed for groups of 6+ players, but it is possible for groups of 4-5 to come and participate (Though quite challenging)".
Well after months of waiting for family to come into town, I can tell you that is a bold-faced lie (at least for Temple of the Gods). There is absolutely no doubt in my mind that my wife and I would have breezed through that room on our own. Only one puzzle required two people, and there were nowhere near enough puzzles to make it unmanageable for a small team. I appreciate the confidence in themselves, but our team of 2-3 has bested much larger scale and challenging rooms.
If you have a huge group of people that want to hang out and do escape rooms for the first time, Portal is a wonderful place to go. It is definitely catered for corporate team building activities. However, if you are an escape room enthusiast with a "small" team (I have only experienced one room that actually required four players), you are better off looking elsewhere.
I love escape rooms, so I am eager to be proven wrong. I look forward to eventually doing Voyager, but unless the system changes up, I'll just wait until the next time family is in town to justify the...
Read moreMy wife picked an escape room for here Motherâs Day event. We had 6 people, or two sons and their cousins. Boomers, millennials and gen z.
We did Tomb of the Gods.
The place has a very nice lounge! Totally unexpected; we told them it should be top billing! There are screens that show the action in the rooms. Cocktails are creative and good. Glowing cocktails, cocktails with orange and happen, lavender martini, many others, weâll come back and try them all.
The bartender was fantastic! She served us despite being there before official opening, while she got the bar prepped. She was skilled and handled us well. One of the brothers who own the place was there. Charming, smart, engaging and energetic.
This started the event very positively! We signed in on tablets, chose our team: Colonel Byrnelâs Army (way inside joke).
Then our guide came to call us upstairs. We watched two videos, one about escape rooms in general. The other specifically about the room we were going to do.
While finishing the last video, our guide stepped away, when it was done, he stepped through the portal in character and proceeded to guide us through it (the portal is a âspace tunnelâ, black with white lightsâŚ). He had become the driver from the jungle in Jumanji! Fun introduction and clues before we went in.
I wonât spoil the room, but suffice it to say, the sets Were very well done, the videos were thematically great, Fallout meets Pennyworth.
The room was challenging visual puzzles, physical puzzles, sound puzzles locks, weights, colors, numbers letters and more!
We finished the last part with 2 seconds to go. This was level 3 of 5. Weâre not experienced at all at these things, though I can imagine we could be and thereâs plenty of room for more challenge!
This was a first class adventure, nothing left to desire and not a single inconsistency. Go do...
Read moreI am an escape room fanatic having done 50+ rooms and my best experience was at portal adventures. I had gone with my usual group of three others (we have been doing escape rooms for years) and they all felt similarly.
We did Tomb of the Gods and the room was so intricately decorated with unique, intelligent puzzles that we had not seen before. And we had seen a lot!!! They are truly correct in calling the room immersive by look, sound and experience.
Our game master (Cade?) was equally impressive in prepping us with solid instructions (it was not the same old rules we are used to listening to) and in giving us nudges when appropriate to point us in the right direction. He also gave us a bit of history of the place, calling it a labor of love from the rooms to their super cool bar. You can see a lot of heart and thought was put into building and creating their place. Even the flooring of their well themed bar was done with such detail and imagination. All of it was super impressive and you can tell these folks care and love what they do.
We left the place continuing to talk and think about how well thought out the place was. Our main concern was when can we get back together to try out their other room and when will they build more rooms? We also wanted to get the word out that this is a special place and wish it continued success.
Thank you portal adventures for an amazing, jaw dropping...
