Me and my wife heard of Vong's Thai Restaurant from a co-worker. While traveling in the area, we decided to give it a try for lunch 8/20. It's tucked into Bellingham Plaza eith the Stop n Shop. Very unassuming. This isn't your fine dining establishment. We were the first to arrive and were greeted by friendly staff.
I knew what I wanted to try as my litmus test for comparison as we frequent a couple of Thai restaurants in RI.
I started off with (1). Summer Rolls (2) $4.50 Vegetable with rice paper and choice of Pork and Shrimp and the
(35). Panang Curry. $10.50 The best of Thai favorite curry with choice of pork, chicken, beef, and thin slice of lime leaves in coconut milk and Panang curry paste served with steam rice.
My wife ordered (2). Egg Rolls (4) $5.30 Deep fried crispy rolls stuffed with ground pork, vegetable and served with sweet chilli sauce. (10). Satay $6.30 Choice of grilled marinated chicken breast or pork tenders, served with cucumber and traditional homemade satay sauce.
And the (25). Kang Sen Lorn. $8.25 (Glass Noodle LG Soup) Chicken Glass Noodle Soup.
The summer roll rice paper was dry, not moist and lacked the flavor found with this appetizer. It was just okay! The Panang Curry wasn't what I was expecting given the type of flavors found with curry dishes. If I go back, I would try the Masaman Curry.
My wife really liked the thai egg rolls. The Chicken Satay was also pretty good. She absolutely enjoyed her Chicken Glass Noodle Soup. My wife is the soup snob when it comes to all soups. She felt there was a ton of flavor, could have used a little more garlic but gave it really good marks. Our waitress never came around to ask us about our lunch but I equate this to lack of experience and no points taken off for that.
If I could give the place 3 1/2 stars I would, so I'm giving it a...
Read moreWe've been twice since they opened their new location and I'm not sure if we'll be back. The food has been good both times, but if you want takeout, be prepared to call 6+ times before someone actually picks up. It's not even worth it on the weekends. We have tried a few times and hang up after they tell us the wait is an hour and 20 minutes.
Last Thursday, I called 5 or 6 times within a half hour period before someone answered to take my order. The food was great and I really enjoyed the pad thai. I also asked about the bahn mi, which they told me is made in the morning when the owner is in and there are a limited amount that are made. I asked if they have them on Sundays and they said yes. So I called back today to order the bahn mi because I wanted to take it to work for my lunch tomorrow. I was told they didn't have any, as the owner is not in! Slightly annoyed, I ordered the pad Thai again. When I picked up my order, I gave them a $15 gift certificate and my debit card for the remaining $2. They Tell me that the credit card minimum is $12! So, I had to leave the restaurant to go to the ATM, then come back for my food. Now, I'm even more annoyed. I ordered from their takeout menu and nowhere on it does it state they have a credit card minimum. It may not have annoyed me so much if I wasn't really looking forward to the bahn mi that they stated they have on Sundays... We most likely will not be back for these reasons. Mainly, If I'm hungry, I don't want to have to call the restaurant 5 or more times before they pick up to take my order. And truly disappointed that I've been unable to try the bahn...
Read moreI didn't like surprises on my bill. I was overcharged from both menus (online/paper). If you're going to list chx, beef, veg, shrimp, fish at $12 don't upcharge me $4 for fish unless you tell me when ordering. A good restaurant would list veg 11, chx12, Shrimp/Fish 16 or use a sticky note on the menu ....
The Tom Yum was flavorful and nicely hot . I prefer when the chef scrapes the HOT SEEDS from the pepper , 🌶️, the seeds don't cook down and a extra second to pull them out would have kept the dish hot but not crazy hot. Veggies and fish were fresh and the broth was great. The menu made me think the Pho has noodles cooked in. When we go to Chinatown they put that or rice on the side so it isn't mushy for takeout . So we didn't order it but will have to try it sometime.
I would have gladly paid the original $2 upcharge disclosed when we asked to mix shrimp and fish but I was up charged on the spicy rice $4 too . I thought it was good but I can only give 4 * because PHO PASTEUR in Chinatown is 5* for value, and perfect heat level. Vohns was very good but poor menu and communication took it down 1... I also hate restaurants that always say "Market Price".... No, prices don't change that radically up or down, and a sticky note or a whiteboard or waiter can indicate what the price is so a college kid isn't broke trying to impress his date when he gets a surprise...
