If I could I would give them 0 stars if I could I love this place but after the incident that happened with our visit there I'm not sure if I will ever go back. Everything was fine in the beginning we got our waters my friend and I ordered and everything was fine. Then she got her soup that was good. Then our food came out she got the general tso chicken lunch special and I got the coconut shrimp. The general tso was so hard u couldn't put a fork through it and the one piece u could eat tasted old. Also at this time our waters were empty we flagged our waitress down and explained that the chicken was rock hard and she asked us if we wanted more water we both said yes. My friend sat there with no food for 20 mins while I ate most of my food. When her food was bought back her egg roll was gone the chicken was not chicken anymore and it was mushy so she told the waitress she just didn't want it take it off the bill. So she had to go ask her manager and took 3 dollars off the bill. Then she bought the checks I paid my first and she bought it back to me I signed and put 0 for the tip bc I had a couple dollars in my purse. She took my signed copy and took my friends bill to be processed when she came back she opens up my bill and yells at me u forgot something and pointing at the tip part well no I didn't she goes yes u did and stood over me while I put the tip on the table and then she opens my friends too and did the same thing I got up from the table and got the manager while she is telling my friend that she will put a tip on the table my friend agreed and then ran when the server walked away and she ran after her screaming ur a liar ur a liar. I'm all about tipping but do ur job and damn don't yell and run people down for a tip she didn't deserve the couple dollars she got. From the previous comments it looks like this happens often and the manager knew this was going on and let's it happen. So u just lost customers that go there at least three or four times a month and a lot of friends go there too and after telling them and the bullying of the waitress no one I know will be coming back there are many more restaurants that are out there that do a great job and...

After all the Chinese restaurants in Michigan City closed we were looking for a new restaurant. This place is amazing.

From the outside it didn't look like much. We almost didn't go in.

The service was very good. A gentleman named Tom waited on us. He kept our water always filled, took our order promptly, and was very attentive. We didn't have to look for him when we wanted something. A hand up and he was there. 😀

We started out with the spring rolls. They were so good we started eating them right away and I forgot to take a picture. We decided they were so good we would order more and I could take a picture of them then. We devoured the second set without even thinking about a picture until they were half gone. Yum. 😋😁

She had the empress chicken. I tasted it. It was very good. The plate full was more than she could eat. 😊

I had the orange chicken. It was even better. And our order came up quickly.

The saki was not to my liking. It was served not. The heat must have separated it. The top was good like a light whiskey. The bottom of the decanter tasted awful.

This is one of the best places we've been to this year.

It's hidden in a strip mall, and we had to drive around to find it. It's not obvious.

Dinner prices run $10-16. A strong recommendation.

Don't forget to "like" reviews and photos you like. This helps...

Update: I've lived in the area for 12 years and have gone to this restaurant all 12 of those. This was THEE place to get not just Chinese, but a quality meal period. No other restaurant in the area came remotely close to the quality, atmosphere, and service. Fast forward to today, management has allowed this place to tank. Cheap detergent stains on all the glasses, ripped seats that haven't been fixed, dirty mirror at the bar. The food tonight tasted left over/reheated. With the prices the way they are now, why is everything in such disarray? This place has gone down hill over the years. They seem to have switched to cheaper ingredients. The vegetables and seafood had no flavor. They also have some ceiling issues. The old favorites like General Tsos Shrimp tasted reheated.

That said, the staff themselves are still 5 stars and very friendly. Everytime I finish a beer at the bar, the waiter is almost instantly there asking if I want another. Flawless. Which is even better when so many tasks are delegated to the bartender.

Unfortunately, this was probably our last visit here. It was wonderful while it lasted. But this place is ran by...

Ho Ping Garden and Sushi Bar is a true culinary treasure and absolutely worth the drive! The lunch specials are unbeatable, offering a fantastic variety of flavorful dishes at an incredible value. The crispy egg rolls are a perfect start, and their crab Rangoon is some of the best I’ve ever had. My personal favorite is the garlic chicken! It’s always bursting with rich, savory flavor and cooked to perfection. The sushi here is phenomenal, too! With an in-house sushi bar, everything is freshly made to order, ensuring every bite is absolute perfection. And of course, no visit is complete without their warm sake! It's the perfect pairing for such a delicious meal. We even cross state lines from Indiana to Niles, Michigan, just to enjoy the exceptional flavors at Ho Ping. It’s not just dining; it’s an experience you’ll want to repeat. Highly recommend!

Chow Mein is not your typical Chow Mein. It was more like Cashew Chicken with water Chestnut. There was no pan fried noodles. it came with a small bag of crispy chow Mein noodles from a can. It came in more of a soup form. (See tankard photo) I called the store and they said noodle view is Lo Mein and offered to swap it out. They get 5 stars in terms of service. The food isn’t that flavorful and in some cases outright bland. The chicken fried rice has what appeared to be BOILED chicken. The chicken has zero seasoning on it so it wasn’t fried with the rice. The “brown rice” does not appeared to be browned via frying in soy sauce as it’s not much darker than the steamed rice. I expected it to be fried with soy sauce. The food wasn’t terrible but not great.

I ordered both sushi and an entrée from the Chinese menu. They sushi was not rolled sufficiently to stay rolled, so came unwrapped. It can happen, but doesn't lend to a happy experience. The shrimp lo mein was quite a generous amount of shrimp. The noodles were of the flat variety, almost like fettucini. Its not what I am accustomed to, but it was ok-- relatively flavorless. All in all, it was just ok. If I were to to again, I would skip the Chinese menu and order sashimi. The miso soup and seaweed salad were the best parts. I dont think the quality warrants the prices.
