I went to Illinois for some work, and while out there made my way out to Hammond, IN for a couple jobs. Decided some tacos would cap off the day great before I head back to Illinois. I stumbled into this place after a quick search with a coworker. Place was clean, but small. That's fine. Had a nice little family restaurant feel. Staff was friendly, first time I was there only 2 people working, just a guy cooking and a woman taking orders and taking care of other things.
Ordered 2 tacos al pastor, figured it'd be a decent choice. Got my food in decent time, as there was no one else there waiting, a few patrons had already been served. My tacos were not overly dressed, nor was it under-dressed.
Sounds like this place is a real Goldilocks, not too hot not too cold.
But still it stands out to me, I keep thinking about it. This happened when I took my first bite.
I've never had pork cooked this perfectly. Al pastor is my go to for a taco if they offer it, but this was entirely different. It's hard to explain how delicious something is, it's like explaining what makes your favorite color so special. You can't find words why it did what it did.
I had to know if this was a fluke. I went back there 3 times after that, ordering the tacos each time to catch them slipping. They were busy on some days, other times they had a few more staff, but those tacos were still perfect.
This was over 4 months ago that I last visited this place. But it really left a mark on me. Every once in a while you find a wizard in a kitchen. I'm not sure what it is that makes this place so special, but I don't think I can forget it. Which is why I'm making this review. I feel I need to share this bit of love for this fleeting 2 week affair. The staff likely don't remember me, I didn't leave much of an impression, but they left one on me for sure.
It should be noted, while I am just some freckled white guy, I do live in California and have access to a lot of great authentic Mexican cuisine. Something that is a bit more rarer in the upper Mid West of America. While I've been back home in California, I still desire those tacos. There are few places out there that hold a torch to that place in...
Read moreI would not recommend this restaurant to anyone as my spouse and I got food poisoning. We ordered two carne asada plates for $15.75 a plate and one large order of fries. The food was okay but the meat was very salty, the rice tasted old and the fries were very soggy. A chef once advised me that if meat is ever too salty when served its because the meat is on the verge of going bad or was already bad. So to get rid of the taste they over salt the meat. Of course cross contamination could have also played a role here. When I called the establishment they denied everything but one cannot deny our horrible food poisoning 😫. The establishment did not apologize or give a refund. I advise everyone to be careful when ordering from here especially with your hard earned money. Unfortunately, I will not be trying any new Mexican spots and this unfortunately is why we stopped...
Read moreIn all the years I’ve lived in Lansing, I had never tried this place. This place always seems empty, so I figured it was not that great. Today, we decided to stop and try it. The food is just ok, we had the steak taco dinner and it could definitely use some seasoning. The salsas were too watery and definitely no spice to it. As a Mexican myself , I expect authentic and flavorful food, but it did not meet my expectations. The meat is not Skirt Steak, it is a cheaper type of meat. I give it three stars not for flavor, but because presentation was great, the tacos were decent size and portions were a good size. I am still on the hunt for a great Mexican restaurant rather than having to drive to the city...
