Cinco de Mayo, a restaurant whose view across the street is a gas station in BLOOMINGDALE, NEW JERSEY, charges like you are at high end Mexican restaurant in the West Village. And don't get me wrong, I don't mind to pay upwards of $15 (prices are between $15-26 a meal) if the food is good. My wife got the agate rellenos, an avocado with shrimp and "special sauce." The shrimp was tasteless, the special sauce was, you guessed it, mayo squirted on top with a hint of something, all floating on top of a BED OF ICEBERG LETTUCE. This "appetizer" was $9. I thought I'd go with something pretty staple in any Mexican restaurant, the beef tacos. After seeing my wife's order I thought to myself that maybe "beef" was too ambiguous of a word to prey upon, and lo and behold-- the "beef" looked literally like they opened up a canned corned beef hash and dumped it on top of the tortilla and called it a day. Served with what looked like the kind of rice you feed an army of people in middle school lunch. No red or green sauce or even lime provided. $14.95
When I saw the ratings of this place, I was bewildered, but then I realized that people are going for the "atmosphere" and the funny guy on the logo. Very gimmicky !
If you or your close friends have gone to Cancun and stayed in an English speaking, all inclusive resort that lets you pay in USD, you probably would like this place.
If you are feeling daring from your weekly adventure to Applebee's and wanted to find a "nitty gritty" Mexican restaurant, you probably think this place is a "hoot."
I'm no snobby new Yorker, I've grown up around here and I've eaten delicious Mexican food. Taqueria La Juquilita is fantastic, half the price and way better quality. Right in pompton lakes. It just really annoys me when places charge a lot with bad quality and think it's all Gucci. Not for me!
I give two stars because the waitstaff was...
Read moreReally strange reading these reviews because it’s either five stars or one, but our experience was definitely one star. I’ve been waiting to try this place for some time now and decided to get takeout for lunch. I justified the prices by assuming the portions were going to be huge (which is great because leftovers for lunch tomorrow would have been awesome) but that was not the case. We placed our order directly in the restaurant because we were shopping in town, literally pointing at each item we wanted as the gentleman took the order….a combo, a burrito and a cheese quesadilla. My combo was supposed to be an enchilada, a burrito and a tamale. The container had rice and beans and a tamale but the rest of what was in there wasn’t identifiable. There was one soggy tortilla, three small pieces of beef the size of nickels and a huge glob of cheese covered in sauce with brown lettuce covering the top. The container that was supposed to be a burrito was the same thing but instead of a tamale there was a couple soggy tortillas with some shredded chicken (it was supposed to be beef) drowning in enchilada sauce and cheese. The “quesadilla” was three folded tortillas with chicken (chicken tacos????) We asked “are you sure this is our food???” (we were the only ones in there while ordering and pickup and the only check on the counter) and they said “yes!”
I don’t know, it was a bizarre and expensive experience. Definitely not “authentic” or fresh and we aren’t feeling great a couple hours later so we definitely won’t be repeating it to give them the benefit of the doubt. It seems like there are “regulars” posting reviews so maybe they want to just serve their friends and were sending us a message that we weren’t welcome, that’s the only explanation I...
Read moreI'm a huge fan of Mexican food. Especially authentic Mexican food in the hoods of NYC. When I found Cinco De Mayo, I was excited to try a new restaurant. Everything on yelp looked promising. Great reviews.
I ordered steak tacos with rice & beans. This is usually my go to dish at a new Mexican restaurant that I've never been to....especially if a place looks authentic.
Cinco De Mayo looks authentic alright! Not exactly a hole in the wall, but its layout and style is very similar to the Mexican restaurants I go to in Sunset Park (Bklyn, NY).
I was disappointed with my tacos. First, it was ground beef. Not chunky cuts of meat. Second, the tortilla was hard shell (Identical to the ones I purchase at Costco!!!!). Third, the layout on the plate was horrible.
Three tacos in the middle of the plate. Rice on one side and beans (smothered with cheese) on the other side. Can you guess what happens when the liquid from the beans saturate their way onto the crunchy, non-authentic tacos? That's right....not only does it gets soggy, but it it falls apart completely.
I guess people around Butler, NJ don't know what real Mexican food is. Had I wanted this style of tacos, I would've gone to the local Taco Bell!
I think I'll just stick around Dover, NJ for my taco needs.
Price for this dish was $12. Not...
