I find it funny there is not one bad review on here. Unfortunately I can't give 0 stars.
My wife and I went in this place last night. I can't comment on the beer because in the 20 minutes that we were in there, no bartender would even approach us. There were 2 bartenders behind the bar, 2 guys finishing drinks sitting on either side of us and one woman who was being waited on by one of the bartenders. It was by no means a crowded night. The gentleman to our right worked at a bar near our house but lived near Brew Gentlemen. He told us how great the beer and the service was at this place, once they finally grace you with their expert beer knowledge. He added that like at a ride at Kennywood, you have to wait in line to get the good stuff. Apparently, we needed to go get in line at the other end of the bar in order to get this expert advice because we saw people walk up after we had been sitting there for 15 minutes and get served before us. We then walked over to the line there were now 3 bartenders, plenty of staff to handle the 5 people sitting at the bar and still handle the "line." We asked why the bartenders can't serve people who are sitting at the bar. One of the bartenders gave a smug look as if he didn't know what we were talking about. He arrogantly asked us if we wanted a beer. We declined and left. Needless to say, there are plenty of good breweries in Pittsburgh. We will take our taste buds to a different establishment.
On an additional note, this is Braddock, a predominantly African American town. There was only one African American person in the bar. Something is wrong with this picture. I think the next beer they promote should be named Gentrif-IPA.
Response back to Matt, the owner. You just made it an our view vs. your view. You must have been the guy in the hat, also behind the bar, also ignoring us. You never said anything. Way to take charge.
Nobody offered us a free beer like your response says. The bartender said, "Let me get you a beer." If that's code for I'd like to give you a free beer for ignoring you for the past 20 minutes, then I guess I'm just out of touch.
If you have some sign that explains that we shouldn't be sitting at the bar to order drinks, then I didn't see it. Why even have a bar if nobody gets served there? Why didn't the guy sitting next to us, who had been there before, know that we had to go get in line to order?
Just know that we went to an establishment closer to our house after leaving. I walked in and sat down at the bar at 10:59. The bar was filled with about 20 people, all sitting at the bar, tended by one bar tender. By 11:00 I was drinking a cold IPA. That's how a bar...
Read moreAfter hearing about this place on twitter the week after their opening my first instinct was to ask, "A brewery in Braddock?" but I decided to check it out anyways. To say their location is cool does not do it justice! Located in the old Harco Electric shop these guys have put a ton of work and craftsmanship into the building from an amazing new mural (advertising their staple General Braddock beer) to the furnishing, light fixtures, and bar top.
The most important part here though is the beer, which I have to say is just plain AMAZING. My girlfriend and I sampled four of their brews (5 oz. glasses at $2/ea.), both seasonal/special and staples including the Hefeweizen, Chai Wheat (White Sky), Non-Forest Timber Maple, and Smokey Barbecue. We ended up leaving with a growler of the White Sky, which has already been emptied and ready for a refill.
The atmosphere there was just as excellent as the beer, we expected few people on a Saturday afternoon, but every seat was full. We were able to grab two seats are the bar which made it even better because we were able to talk with the two owners/creators. These guys were really knowledgeable and friendly, able to give their recommendations on different beers and tell you the story behind their brewing process for each.
While there is no kitchen (it's just a brewery duh!) They have partnered up with many of the local food trucks to have them present just about every night that they're open, from Tacos to Mac & Cheese. If gives you the chance to try good beer with good food you regularly don't get the opportunity...
Read moreImagine it is Election Day 2022, and you are terrified that the results just might change life as you know it. Your partner and you have both started your second career in nursing, working opposing night and day shifts. You have three children. One of them has just been diagnosed with a severe asthma exacerbation, requiring countless nights of medication and support to survive.
Your favorite brewery since relocating to the state from a grueling nursing education at in a dense urban area releases some amazing beer that you cannot afford to order. You cancel an order placed hastily, just so you can afford the prescription medication bill.
Three days later, you receive an email from UPS that a package from Brew Gentlemen is out for delivery. These fantastic individuals sent your order, even though you had to cancel it, without charge, so that you could enjoy their world-class product while taking care of your family and the community.
There simply is no other brewery for me. I am amazed, and want every person on this planet (and beyond) to support the most incredible, community-focused small business I have come to...
