First, don't expect much from the facility. It is clean but obviously no money went into the dining area or place settings (plastic). Also the staff have some trouble with English which can make ordering challenging. Now that this is out of the way ... DO expect really good food at exceptional prices.
I ordered enough food for two people because I wanted to try several dishes and it cost me less than $15. If the food were average at that price it would be 4 stars but their food is far from average.
My hot and sour soup was both hot and sour and very authentic ingredients. Way better than average hot and sour soup and though I ordered the small size it was not small. Their small is very generous.
I also had Szechuan Shrimp. The ingredients were high quality and generous including the shrimp. The only weak part of this dish was the sauce/seasoning which was milder than expected for Szechuan style dish. Still overall it was tasty, high quality, and very large portion.
Finally dumplings. Very good. Obviously hand made and hand rolled giotza wraps. Neither thin nor thick. Taste was again good and size was large. I could have has enough food with just one order of dumplings. Slight downside again based on my taste was the sauce. I'm not a fan of sweet in my giotza sauce. But this doesn't change the fact that they were again high quality and a generous portion.
In summary, exceedingly spare facility and some service challenges but way above average Chinese food at exceptional prices with...
Read moreIt was love at first bite for me at Hunan Wok. The dine-in experience leaves much to be desired because the dining area set-up is very drab and dull, but who cares? It's Chinese food, not fine dining! The food is what matters and it is ALWAYS good. I've never had a bad customer service experience either. The only matter that I have issue with is that they continue to charge the former NJ sales tax of 6.875% instead of the current rate of 6.625%. It's only a matter of a few cents but If you total that up amongst all of the customers in a year, that adds up to a pretty penny in their pocket! So, make sure to address that when paying for your order. Other than that, I have nothing but high praises and I'll continue to be a lifetime customer.
Update 9/30/25: I understand how hard everyone’s pockets have been affected by inflationary pricing and a declining economy; However, it’s absolutely inexcusable to serve customers spoiled food! My family spent $100 on food last night and nearly everything smelled awful and tasted spoiled. The sesame chicken, and wonton soup were extremely sour! The only thing decent tasting was the French fries! How sad that Hunan Wok has lost a long-established customer....
Read moreWe ordered takeaway for Christmas from Hunan Wok, because it was the only Chinese restaurant still taking dinner orders, and were told that we'd have a 1½ hour wait for our food owing to the extreme busy-ness of the night. Fine, allowances must be made and it's not a major issue to have to wait, but you would hope that the food you received after that length of time would at least be appetizing. Everything was very bland and underseasoned, the vegetables and rice were not properly cooked, and the dumplings were somehow hard to chew. It felt like our food had been made in haste without any care or taste. This was not 4-star food; I've never been so let down by Google ratings. So I had to share my...
