Mary's Gourmet Donut Shoppe — Restaurant in Bristol

These used to be the best donuts in Maryland. Light and fluffy with thick icing and distinct flavors. I don't know if they' have gone under new management or if they're having quality control issues, but it seems like they have slowly been altering the recipes and or techniques. For context, we have gotten donuts here almost every Saturday for nearly five years. And suddenly this year, the donuts started changing. You think it's just an odd donut out now and again, but the box we got today denotes the absolute certainty these donuts have changed. The dough is tighter, the icing thinner. It's like they're trying to be more like a typical American donut, and what made them so good was that they weren't a typical American donut. They're drier now, chewier, and the icing just isn't as good. It's really sad as this was a favorite for us and a family routine. They're not Bad donuts. The staff were all so lovely and kind as I took my time deciding what donuts to get. My friends and I appreciated how filled the cream donuts were.

We did find a lot of the donut fillings to be extremely sweet, with more of a sugary than vanilla flavor to the Long John and Boston Creme fillings. I feel like I didn't get the most pumpkin flavor from the cream inside the pumpkin donut, which I suppose comes with the fact that the cream was a very pale orange, rather than the deeper orange it would be if more pulp was used.

Still, I do think everyone can find flavors that work for them. The lemon danish and the apple crumble donuts were my favorite items; the apple crumble donut had a filling that tasted just like apple pie. And the toppings on the Cookies n Cream and S'mores donuts were lovely.

So while some flavors might not be your favorite, you may also find some you really like. And the staff were truly so kind...
