I have mixed feelings about Michael Angelo's. I always hear people rave on and on about the bakery and I have to be honest that I was one of them. However, I've learned that their service isn't always consistent. For instance, my husband and I recently celebrated our anniversary & he stopped in to bring home a mid-day treat that we could celebrate with. He brought home a small parfait-sized tiramisu and carrot cake. Both appealing to the eyes, we both agreed that we would split both and enjoy the tastes of both worlds. I, selfishly, hung on to the tiramisu because it was absolutely divine but he was "eh" on the carrot cake.
Another time, we had stopped between picking up kids and had time to kill so we picked up and split a Key Lime Pie cupcake. OMG, I still have dreams of that cupcake!
But then came time for my daughter's wedding. I kept recommending Michael Angelo's to them. I tried to schedule a consultation and went in person, but was ignored - even though the place probably only had one or two other customers, but plenty of staff working behind the counter. I flipped through their catalogs, dawdled in the area around the back area and - as much as I hear about their cakes for special occasions - esp weddings - I was surprised at the state of the consultation area in the back of the main shop. Chairs were all torn up. I ended up just going to the front of the store because clearly, no one was coming to the back to help me. I scheduled an appointment. Not even 5 minutes after leaving, I spoke with my daughter on the phone and she could not make the scheduled appointment. I called back - and even though I had just gone through the appointment book with one of the staff - I was told that no other appointments were available. So I kept the appointment. Come the day of the consultation. I was directed to another location outside and to the back of the bakery. The young girl was friendly enough, but really didn't offer much information or warmth - was just matter-of-fact and robot-like. I will admit that waiting around for my daughter and then that she ended up being unable to make it looked really bad, but I already had everything my daughter wanted pictured on my phone so it was fairly quick ironing out the details - even though she couldn't do exactly what I had shown her. She priced out the cake - WHAT IN THE WHAT?????? But ok, I knew wedding cakes were expensive. Then packed me up boxes of samples to bring home to my daughter and her fiancé.
They laughed when they saw the samples. I kid you not, they were maybe the size of a quarter? Not much for someone that would be dropping a small fortune for a cake. And what they did give was stale and hard. Needless to say, we didn't end up ordering from there. I went to a bakery in Parma that took one look at the picture I showed the baker and said he could do it exactly as I had pictured- at A THIRD of the cost that Michael Angelo's quoted me.
There were a few visits here and there for quick little treats - sometimes delicious and other times I clearly knew I went there because they are the only local bakery.
My biggest disappointment was when I ordered several cakes to bring to their winery for a well-needed gathering with a bunch of my friends. We had a great time at the winery, enjoying the wine and appetizers. I had raved on about their tiramisu torte, carrot cake and cupcake assortment. OMG, but the looks on my friends' faces when they tried the bakery. Clearly, all were disappointed but didn't tell me so because everything else was so enjoyable. That was the start of when I noticed their inconsistencies.
Overall, they have some bakers that can cook their hearts out and deliver some of the best tasting bakery you could wish for. Other times, you're eating cardboard and wondering why you didn't just go to Giant Eagle to get bakery at a fraction of the cost. I wish there was a way that you can go in and see who the baker of the day was so you knew...
Read moreMet with the consultant on Saturday, December 26 to discuss having Michael Angelo's create our wedding cake. We decided on our own custom design and had heard good things about Michael Angelo's. However, our experience was not pleasant and the consultant was rude. We arrived and mentioned the number of guests we were going to have at our wedding. The consultant was rude, unprofessional, and stated that they may or may not be able to deliver our wedding cake. Additionally, she was rude when she explained that if we were having a Sunday wedding, that they could only deliver our cake at noon. I went on to explain that while we are having between 75 and 100 guests, but that we are willing to purchase a larger cake (50+) to have the design we want. She replied with an attitude and rudely that she could deliver and the cost of delivery. She went on to rudely explain that if we were having a Sunday wedding, that they could only deliver our cake at noon. We went into the interview knowing that getting a Sunday delivery would potentially cost extra and that it might be a challenge. So, I brushed off her rudeness and continued the consultation. I pulled out our design, which my fiancé (an artist) drew, which she responded to by picking apart the design. Additionally, she tried to tell us that we would not be able to get our design with buttercream as we are doing a special drape on the cake in fondant. She seemed annoyed that our cake incorporates a lot of piping. After being rude and trying to show us some of their designs, the consultant reluctantly agreed to take our design to the cake decorators for their opinion. She returned with the cake and filling samples and then explained that the decorators could create our cake and the cost to create the drape. Upon her return, she seemed a little more willing to listen to our vision for our cake. She even explained that she thought it "would look nice," which was completely different from he previous comments about our design. We continued the tasting in hopes that we would be blown away by the cake and overlook her attitude and rudeness. Overall, this was an unpleasant experience and we will not spend our money to have Michael Angelo's create our cake for our special day. The consultant was rude, talked down to us, and was not willing to listen to our vision for our wedding cake. We will not recommend nor work with Michael Angelo's. Additionally, we were not pleased with the taste of the cakes or fillings. I am not a fan of chocolate, but my fiancé is and he was not pleased with the taste of the chocolate cake. The chocolate cake was dry and the custard filling was disgusting. Additionally, they use a mousse for their fillings, which was served with a dap of the flavor on top of the mousse. The experience received from Michael Angelo's was not pleasant, nor was it top notch. I would not recommend working with Michael Angelo's. Finally, I would say that there are better tasting cakes, as well as better customer service at other bakeries...
Read moreThree cakes in one month, for different occasions… all were ABYSMAL. I picked up a cake picked up on Monday morning, and called on Monday evening to speak to the owner of Michael Angelo’s… the cake I picked up looked like a child baked and frosted it. It was NOT freshly made. I ordered this same cake, a raspberry almond torte, on multiple occasions in the past few years (have been coming for 25+ years), and this time was so bad, SOMETHING must be different. I was told it has always been the same bakers and that nothing has changed… that CANNOT be the truth. After reading other reviews on Google I am far from the only one complaining and upset. Just weeks ago on May 10th, I had picked up 2 different cakes for a graduation celebration… and those too were a grave disappointment. If I had not paid for these orders ahead of time I would never have accepted them. On the aforementioned May 10th order, I specifically wanted and ordered the Tiramisu cake WITH the lady fingers, which was AVAILABLE ON YOUR WEBSITE. I called to order and was assured that was the cake I would receive. I received a chocolate frosted tiramisu cake, WITHOUT ladyfingers, after being assured I would receive what I ordered. I also ordered a gold drip graduation cake and the frosting was hideous and grainy. This bakery had to have had a shift in personnel, or corners are being cut so short that the product is suffering. Michael Angelo’s have made all of my family reunion cakes, communion confections, and confirmation cakes, wedding cakes, and more in the 25 plus years I have been coming here. This year specifically I have noticed everything is not what it used to be… even the decorating is not what it used to be. I have spent well into 5 figures at this establishment since I have been coming here, but I will not be returning. I will spread the word to friends and family, that the products you are serving are a far cry from that they used to be. I was embarrassed to serve the cakes, and though I did, hardly anyone partook. The cake ordered for May 19th’s frosting was grainy and overly sweet… AND the cake must have been sitting because the raspberry inside was so congealed to the cake - no way was this made fresh it was hideous and tasted awful.
So to sum it up 3 cakes and all were not good. The one below sloppy messy congealed raspberry filling a mess it was embarrassing. Attached are two photos… the first was the Raspberry Almond tort ordered this month, and the second photo was the one ordered 3 years ago… it exemplifies how little Michael Angelo’s seems to care.
EDIT: Why did it take over month to respond? It is nice that you're speaking to your bakers, however words are cheap, what about some type of compensation for the customer, Such...
