I'm not from nearby. My brother and I were visiting Brookville to receive tax paperwork, and wanted food. I suggested we try something random that wasn't a chain we were familiar with. We settled on La Calaca.
I will be honest with you, reader. I am not exceptionally familiar with Latin cultural food beyond the basic American understanding of it, and this place was shockingly good.
I didn't expect it to be bad, obviously, but what I was not expecting was to have the absolute best tacos I have ever had in my life within Brookville. What an absolute gem of a place.
Server was extremely friendly, menu had quite a few options, our food came out within a few minutes, and was just perfectly fresh and flavorful. The portions seemed normal, but something about the food was also so dense and rich with flavor that I only ate two of my three tacos, despite not eating anything for the entire day. I felt fantastic afterward, and took one home to eat later.
Prices were also perfectly reasonable. I spent a total of $19 with my taco order and a few soft drink refills, and left a tip because I wanted to.
The environment inside was very inviting and vibrantly beautiful, with the Calica inspiration clear throughout the entire restaurant. To be honest, I didn't look close enough to tell if the wall murals were AI or not, but I don't particularly care. The vibe was immaculate.
I highly, highly recommend. I'm a pasty white guy, sure, but I like food. This is the best Mexican restaurant I have ever been to in my entire life....

From the moment I walked in, I knew I was in for something special. The aroma alone could make you hungry all over again.
I ordered the carne asada tacos and they were absolutely phenomenal — juicy, perfectly seasoned, and served on fresh, homemade tortillas that melted in my mouth. The fresh salsa had just the right kick without overpowering the flavors.
The staff were friendly and treated me like family, checking in often and making sure everything was spot on. You can tell they take pride in every plate they put out.
The atmosphere was lively and authentic, making it feel like a little piece of Mexico right in the neighborhood.
If you’re craving real, honest Mexican food that hits all the right notes, this is the spot. I’ll definitely be back (probably sooner...
Read moreI had to update my review since I’ve eaten there several times now. I love this restaurant! I’ve been to Mexico about 10 times and this food is very authentic. Their street tacos are phenomenal and everything we’ve had has been delicious. Servers are very friendly and attentive. Weve been eating here every week. Love that Brookville has such a great restaurant! PREVIOUS REVIEW: We stopped by for lunch and split the appetizer sampler. It was plenty big for 2 for lunch. The only negative is the chicken fingers (they tasted store bought and didn’t go with the rest of the platter). The other items were delicious and fresh. Service was great but only 1 other...
