I really like this place! The food is ALWAYS excellent. Often times you eat somewhere and the food is unbelievably bland. Not here. Hog Hollow uses a combination of flavors with lots of fresh herbs and ingredients to deliver a satisfying meal. My favorite sauce is the parmesan sauce that i use on my pizza or to dip extra dough in. It's so parmesan-y (!) with olive oil and some black pepper in there. DELICIOUS! They used to do a sandwich-of-the-day, but i haven't seen it in a bit. Maybe I'm not coming when it's offered.. (??). The choices were always unique and had an awesome melding of ingredients, though. Atmosphere is great with a mix of all sorts of folks. There's indoor dining and two levels of outdoor dining; a large open air deck on top & beneath that, a "backyard" full of tables and an ampitheater for when they have entertainment, which is often. Great landscaping and of course, our mountains are a lovely backdrop. (: Service is OK. You look at the menu, then order at the bar. They give you a number to set at your table, then bring the food out. You get your own drinks. So, it's very casual in that sense, which is fine. However, of all the times I've been there, I've had one person who actually acted somewhat like a server and offered to get me things, asked how my food was, etc... It was surprising and welcome! I understand why they prob don't ask alot... it's not that kind of sit down restaurant. I have to be honest, though--in general, the men at the bar who take the orders could use serious customer service skills. To me, they don't seem very welcoming, like good hosts to their establishment should be. The women are usually much more friendly and engaging. I'm not asking for bobble-head fakeness. I'm asking for a smile and a hello. Overall.. come here for the excellent food, brews, and atmosphere; not the service (if you expect that sort of...
Read moreWhile reading the reviews for this restaraunt I thought it was interesting that all the reviews were either a 1 or 5 star. I now have a better understanding of what is going on.
This place has a very disorganized ordering process and expects you to do all the work, despite prompting a minimum 20% tip. They expect you to get all your plates, silverware, and non alcoholic drink. Its obvious they also expect you to buss your own table. The restaurants response to another review stating "this is common" is total nonsense. After waiting almost an hour the food ended up being very mediocre.
After finishing our meal I started writing the above review, and then the band started playing music outside. The outside area was great and the band was fantastic. The outside area has a great fireplace with kids playing and room for family's with dogs.
I think the dichotomy between reviews has to do with expectations. This IS NOT a place to go have a nice comfortable meal with your family. The food is very average and the customer service is designed for efficiency. This is basically a small outdoor concert venue where you can drink beer, listen to good music, and scarf down average pizza. You can have a good experience if you keep...
Read moreWe were super excited to eat here after hearing about the vegan options. We love pizza, so we were thrilled to find a local place with vegan cheese. Sadly, we won't be back. We want to support vegan options in town but yikes, this was bad. Worst pizza I've had to be brutally honest.
The crust was thin and soggy, with a chewy, wet texture, but somehow burnt at the same time. I don't know when "wood-fired" became synonymous with "burnt black" but that's what we got. Couldn't even really taste the pizza toppings over the taste of ash. The top was covered in 5-6 medium to large air bubbles that had completely blackened as well. We were impressed with the amount of spinach we got on top, but the other toppings were incredibly sparce. I don't even know if it had any cheese, and the sauce was just plopped on the top in globs. The crust was nearly 1/3 of the slice, and so burnt it was inedible.
We also got the apple dessert pizza. Same story with the crust. Apples were sparcely placed around, cinnamon lightly dusted over about half the pizza, and I don't know if icing even made it on top. Just tasted like ash with some apple.
My mom got the wings. She said they were undercooked, borderline raw on one, and couldn't...
