Janet's Cafe a place even leftovers taste amazing! I went here for St. Patty's Day for their Corn Beef & Cabbage special. It was roughly $15 a plate which seems high. However, the tenderness of the corn beef along with mouth watering taste as the tender texture hit your mouth combined with cabbage that was created JUST right to pull the flavor of the beef out combined with a horseradish/sour-cream dip. The very THOUGHT of it makes my mouth water right now.
Plump potatoes and tender carrots heated up just perfect. A smooth taste that even a 3 year old desires must say something to you parents out there. NOT to mention my son tried the corn beef and cabbage and LIKED it. It reminds me of the old commercials for life cereal. Mikey liked it!
Just when you thought the main dish tasted wonderful along with the warm tomato basil soup or salad that came before it. To top if all of you get a huge piece of your favorite pie. I'm talking close to 1/4 of a pie. Ever heard of peanut butter and chocolate pie? With chocolate chips and creamy whip cream? Oh yes... you're getting a to go box.
The amazing thing is, we chopped up the potatoes, sprinkled cheese on them along with some eggs and the rest of the corn beef chopped up the next morning tasted divine. No day old taste at all!
The food, wonderful, absolutely wonderful; and Janet even made us the St. Patty's special meal 2 hours before the advertised time due to our own misunderstanding. The food was amazing, but the service was even better! The ladies who brought us the drink, took our order, and served us were all very pleasant to talk to and patient. My 3 year old got most of the pleasantness and compliments on top of it all they slipped a cookie in the to go box as a surprise for him later.
So, you want a place to go have an enjoyable atmosphere, wonderful food you can take home and enjoy the next day even, not to mention a nice view of the shops that share the parking lot of this restaurant? Then you've found a place here in Alpine that is easy to get to.
Cons: This isn't really a con to the restaurant really, but it still could be a little frustrating. Parking is minimum and because the town of Alpine has all their roads tore up with construction this could detour you away form going here. Don't LET IT... you'll find it's WELL worth the time AND the money if you have both to give. Don't pass this place up you'll walk away with a...
Read moreMany 5 star ratings! Have you ever been to a true 5 star restaurant? Easy to please and I was hoping to actually find a review with the substance to back the rating up! You are all nice folks! Ok. I've been here once, so as consistency is important, I cannot speak to that. Very much enjoyed the (log cabin) aesthetics. Indoor and outdoor seating as noted in some reviews and pictures. Get there early on the weekends, before 9am or be willing to wait partners. Pies and baked goods are near the front entrance, inside, a marketing ploy? Some seats for waiting otherwise stand. Was seated outside on a warm summer morning, not too hot before 10am. Had the Spanish omelette with avacado, and ordered crispy hash browns, side of fruit, and a piece of cherry pie I eyed upfront. The omelette was served warm/appropriate as well as the hash browns. The fruit presentation was very good and was fresh and tasty on the palate. The omelette was satisfying and very good overall. The hash browns were crispy on the outside, however, mine as well as the other order were both mushy on the majority of the offering. The pie crust on the cherry pie was the best aspect, flaky, buttery with a slight chewy texture. The filling unfortunately was a pre made filling I wager, so overall a little disappointing. A note about the coffee. If you are a fan of Farmer Brothers, you'll be happy no doubt. I prefer coffee with more taste and body. The service was indeed efficient, pleasant, and well orchestrated. Since my traveling companion was gracious enough to pay, I can only say that the price to quantity/quality ratio was good. I cannot so easily (handout) a hard to earn 5 star rating. Realistically, the truth is that this restaurant rates well for ambiance, service, and the food is good. The rating then should be between 4.0-4.2 stars with easy room for improvement if (you) offered a more substantial...
Read moreBeen coming to Sunday brunch at JMC for a couple years now, foods consistently gd, servers too, also consistent is the line for both men's & women's restroom. Sometimes the wait is so long that I've heard people ask tobe allowed to get a head (no pun intended). Not unusual to see 4 waiting in men's line & I've seen 6 for the women's.
For a restaurant with customers waiting upwards of 30 min to get a table, this is totally unacceptable. Today I gave up 15 min of my time away from my wife to stand with 3 other equally frustrated men as servers carrying plates of food wove there way among us. 1-single use for each gender in an establishment serving upwards of 200 diners. Really?? Today I asked to speak with a manager and got the owner: however, she didn't identify herself as such, which told me she preferred the anononimity style of restaurant management. From that moment she went on the defensive.
I didn't mince words but politely, in front of the other gents brought the issue to her attention. She couldn't have been less concerned and all but said so. Why I and even suggested a space adjacent containing a counter w/some plates and boxes against a wall that might be annexed for additional space, a space which over the past 15 min had been entered by an employee.
I'm a seasoned business owner and her indifference shocked me. "Where will we box our pies from". "The problem is only on Sundays". (Arguably the day the overflow of diners fill the cash register yet she dismissed the idea that she was making a profit). And without excusing herself, rudely walked away then curtly, defiantly even, muttered over her shoulder to whoever was in earshot.."Well,...they must like the food". Talk...
