Even though I only stopped in for morning coffee on my way to a nearby hike, I thought I’d add my thoughts about Whale City Bakery by posting a mini-review. After more than 30 years, this little cafe/restaurant/bakery in the tiny town of Davenport (pop. 400) has become a magnet for locals as well as tourists driving along Highway 1. In fact, while waiting for a fresh pot of coffee to be brewed, I talked to a family of five from Denmark who were headed from San Francisco to Monterey. They said that their guidebook recommended this spot for “a good big American breakfast”. There was also a very chatty local couple of regulars who were picking up some breakfast burritos to eat on the beach across the street. Not a bad idea. There’s plenty of indoor seating, a small sunny dining area in front, and some tables in the shade in the back. You can see the ocean in the distance. The regulars said it’s a terrific spot to watch the sunset. The menus for breakfast, lunch, and dinner are huge and I’m told that the portions are too. Prices seem reasonable. Maybe next time, I’ll grab one of their house-made pastries to go with my coffee (which was excellent, by the way).

UPDATE: When we love a place, we return! This is one of my favorite stop along highway 1. But somethings have changed: Starting from the fried calamari, at least on our dish at this time, didn't come with the little squids that use to come, also I ask the young waitress about the jar of beer and she said that they no longer serve that, it was weird because they always had, fish and calamari was missing flavor, maybe was a bad day, maybe wrong person working there?!? I don't know, but my experience changed .... Manager, please review to keep the quality of this amazing place that we love! Adding new pics and keeping the old one's as well.... This is one of my favorites spot in California, not only because have a good food but also because is very close to the Shark Fin Cove, you can eat good, drink something and after walk a lot in front of the beach, I definitely recomend the beer Pilsner that they have, is really really good! Calamari is very good too, price is very fair, by $15 each dish and 20...25 per person, also you can enjoy a very beautiful sunset over there.

Im sad to share this experience of my inreactions with the Whale City Bakery. As a single mother with two successful children in College, I now am a empty nest. Davenport exotic sea glass is one of my passions to hunt for, so i packed my truck and decided to live on Hwy 1 for awhile and treasure hunt the coast. I never felt so belittled and humiliated by anyone like i did by the owners of the Whale city Bakery. I spent my money purchasing my breakfast many mornings. Being across the street in the parking lot of the beach whare we sea glassed & would often just walk to get a coffee or use there restroom. I was very amazed on how heavy the negitive energy was coming at me when ever I came to the bakery. The assumption was that i was homeless and they did not want me around. The dirty looks, pounding on the restroom door, unkindness and the feeling of not being welcomed was so that i found myself not comfortable going near there because it was horrible. The last strw for me was i had gone to use there bathroom like many people do one evening and I never had felt so humiliated for going to the rest room ever in my life. The owners pounded on the door i opened came out nobody there so i went back in to finish and again pounding. I opened the door and the owner was standing there telling me i was in there a long time and why. As i was being grilled for using the bathroom the lady owner came out and asked why i was using the bathroom, answered that my stomach was upset and she yells real loud and with discuss " great your using our bathrooms because your stomach upset, just great" then slammed the the door as she left. Then I was questioned again. Feeling completely humiliated I walked away. Its flabbergasting to go to such a beautiful place on this earth and do what you love doing and feel so unwanted by people who are judging you for what your not and even if i was homeless shame on them. I spent my hard earned money on there food and recommended the pastries to many tourist as they flowed through the town. As a business owner myself, I could never treat somebody like they did I. This is a place where tourist come from all over the world and neighbor's like i come to enjoy a little time away in a beautiful place We are all equals and for people who serve high priced food and caffeinated beverages should know that a restroom is part of the cycle. Duhhh....... I do recommend the cafe next door. Great cheese...

Young man comes to my table and watches the damn Soccer game and never introduces himself... he just stands next to my table watching the soccer game..Im like ummm "are you going to take my order?" he didn't he says "oh yes" yes with one eye on the TV still, still not introducing himself. Zero training zero professionality!! Anyway I put an order for coffee and $24 dollars for corned beef hash. He cleans off a couple tables, Walks Behind the Counter cleans off a couple more tables, lollygags behind the bar, I'm wondering if the coffee is self-serve at this point. When he sees me ask another customer if I'm supposed to get my own coffee, he finally brings me my coffee about 6 minutes after I ordered. Unacceptable! Only After he saw me talking to other customers he put his ass in gear and started checking up on me, re-filling my coffee's etc.. The corned beef and hash was not a large serving but was delicious. I still tip the kid 20% despite him never introducing himself and being more concerned with the soccer game, and intentionally slacking on my coffee. I came back today on the 20th of February for a simple coffee, they charge me $5.50 for a large coffee, I gave them 50 cent tip so $6 for a coffee. I go to fill up my coffee and there's no more dark roast coffee left. I said "for a $6 cup it would be nice to have dark roast" she said "I'd have to wait another 10 minutes", this is the kind of bullshit I actively avoid. For the prices you guys charge your service should be Immaculate, there should be no waiting for coffee there should be fresh brewed coffee for customers all the time. Guys like me are Not spoiled Wealthy Liberal customers like you're used to, all too scared to be called racist, and I'm not one of them. I will never ever be back to this place. When you let one ethnicity work the whole place without any diversity, you don't get training you don't get professionalism you get family members who...

This place used to be absolutely amazing. Breakfast, lunch or dinner. Taco night on Thursday was the best. The new owners have raised prices, decreased portion sizes and are regularly running out of staple items including their best selling beer most days. What used to be a $5 taco plate on Thursday is now over $15 and comes with a handful of chips instead of beans, rice and a salad. The food is still pretty good, it's just not the same and it's hard to go with the prices having doubled on average. The servers are great and very friendly and attentive and the cooks do a great job with the food. They haven't seen any significant raises despite the price hikes and all that extra money is just going in the new owners pockets. They own a few other restaurants in Santa Cruz and over the hill. It's a business to them where it used to be a community pillar under the previous owners. I still sometimes go to see friends and hang out but not nearly as much as I used to and I know dozens of people who don't go anymore at all which is sad. The other bigger locally owned restaurant down the road now has a way way better happy hour going on Tues Wed and Thurs and I go there instead most of the time. It's also owned managed and staffed by local families instead of an over the hill investor like this...
