White House Cafe — Restaurant in Camden

The upside: Fabulous food, good local atmosphere! We had 2 sweet teas (southern sweet), 2 shrimp cocktail apps (large shrimp, excellent flavor, homemade cocktail sauce that was VERY good but a tad bit spicy from horseradish), cheeseburger with onion rings (the best onion rings I have ever had in my life), and a 6oz sirloin steak with salad and loaded baked potato (the real thing - not microwaved - again one of the best I've had ever).

The downside: the check was $50 BUT I would not hesitate to go back, and will even drive past other towns just to eat here. Next time I would opt for a water with lemon to cut the bill some, then opt for a cheaper entree, and skip the side salad completely, but would still order the shrimp cocktail, likely split one. I would expect that would knock the bill down between $30-35.

I should note the following: I am not a local, we are from a much more populated area, so I was hesitant at first. We had dinner, in January, 8:30pm, so it was dark outside when we first drove past. Without knowing the town, I could not tell if it would be an establishment that I would frequent after dark. We opted to turn around and give it a try after a police officer recommended it and we read the Google reviews. Very neat place, the owner bought it in April of 2000, and expanded the restaurant, although the original restaurant dates back to 1907. Very friendly staff and fairly quick service. Clean restrooms. I ordered two taco salads with cheese 🫕 dip and chips spent $38.87 paid $40.00 with tip and I had to return the taco salads because they didn’t even put the chili on it and after I had gotten home with the new taco salads … it was the worst taco salads I have ever had I don’t know what they did wrong or change in the ingredients, but when I called to complain about the food and they told me that because they refused my order and because it was a Togo order I couldn’t get a refund or a replacement order… I have never had a problem with this restaurant until now… I don’t recommend ordering the taco salad from here it’s nasty and disgusting 🤮even the salsa and avocado dip was nasty. I don’t know what they did different but they need to go back to the drawing board with that...

Rating for prices only. Had a friend visiting us from Florida and wanted to treat him to a restaurant we knew had lots of items on their menu. His only request was no Mexican food as he’d recently eaten at one before arriving to our town. He was shocked at the prices of the steak and other dinner plate prices (as were we). $42 for the steaks wow. The night before we’d eaten at another nearby restaurant and their steaks were $10 less. So while we aren’t cheap and realize inflation has hit we opted for sandwiches which prices were inline with other eating places.
