My best restaurant reviews always contain a non-food component. We can get good food at home, usually for less than we can go out for. And the quality of what we put together ourselves is usually higher, if nothing else, better known.
In the case of Camellone, neither holds true. But I'll get to the price and quality in a moment.
Something you need to know about this small eatery is that it is family owned. It's a labor of love and pride that you won't find in many chain restaurants, if any. You are reminded of that as you first enter and are welcomed with a very sincere hello and an even more appreciative thank you as you leave. Being truly valued as a customer is part of a good dining out experience. And while I waited for my order to be prepared, I witnessed each guest treated the exact same way, whether it was to pick up a to-go order, place an order to go, or just stop in for a $1.00 drink.
This is likely my only chance to ever eat here, as it is far from home and far from any stop I will likely make in the future. But for the brief time I spent there, I was treated like family and truly felt the very most important thing to these wonderful people was that I enjoyed my experience, from the atmosphere to the food.
Speaking of the food, I ordered the pizza baked spaghetti. Everything is made fresh at Camellone's and is locally sourced. The ricotta cheese was substantial in the dish and really tasted fresh and flavorful. I think it really made the dish and complimented the not-to-sweet sauce, fresh pepperoni, mushrooms, and pile of melted mozzarella. As it was being prepared, I wondered if the portion might be a little small. I started looking at the display case and contemplated getting a piece of pizza as well. The assorted pies displayed looked delicious and cut in large triangles.
But my spaghetti came with a side salad (crisp lettuce and fresh veggies, obviously, and more of that fresh mozzarella). By the time I finished my spaghetti and salad, there was no room for more. As much as I wanted to taste their pizza, I had to resist. The portion was a perfect size. Why wouldn't it be? These people know what they're doing.
And that, with a can of Pepsi, cost $10.99. You can go to a fast-food restaurant and throw a run-of-the-mill, processed meal for the masses down your gullet and pay more than that. And you might still feel unsatisfied afterwards.
Do yourself a favor if you're in proximity to Camellone. Grab something that rivals anything you can make at home, for less than you can make it yourself, and let the friendly, caring staff make you feel like a family member just home-cooked it for you.

Read moreI can only review what I tried. Many have commented on the calzones and I didn't get that. First, I tried to order on the website. They have some type of 3rd party thing that saves them money I am sure, and you can tell. The ordering was not working, so I just called my order in: Detroit Pizza & Cheesey Garlic bread, ready in 30-35 minutes. I arrived 45 minutes later to give them some extra time as I ordered at 5:30 pm, and did not get the friendly greeting mentioned by others, as the staff was busy making pizzas. When I was acknowledged w/ a raised eyebrow, I found out my garlic bread needed to be made and I had to wait another 5 minutes. Not a deal killer yet.
The garlic bread, for $4.59, turned out to be one roll sliced in half and sprinkled w/ generous pizza cheese and garlic spread. Tasted okay, but didn't seem like much for the price.
The deal breaker for me was the Detroit pizza I ordered, expecting traditional Detroit pizza. It had the thick dough of that style, and I think the crust was actually above average. I am guessing the young workers manning the shop when I visited could not mess up the dough that had been prepared by more knowledgeable workers earlier. However, one of the hallmarks of Detroit style is cheese pushed to the edges resulting in a carmelized cheese edge that is awesome...when they make it that way. On mine, no cheese to the edge, other than a few stray crumbs. And, in case one is wondering if making it that way is difficult, it's not. I worked in a pizza shop that made this type of pizza, and keeping cheese away from the edge is actually harder, so this must have been an intentional choice. Finally, I made an error ordering in this, my first and only, visit to this shop. One of the sauce types listed was "spicy", which I foolishly assumed meant that the red sauce would be spicy. Nope. If I had to guess, they just omit red sauce and sprinkle it with tabasco, that's what it tasted like anyway. I like spicy food, so the heat didn't put me off, just not what I thought I would be getting. I would suggest sticking w/ red sauce. It's a shame the pizza was a miss, as I wished the rest of the pizza lived up to the dough. I suggest you go elsewhere if you want a traditional Detroit-style pizze w/ a carmelized crust, and possibly try to target daytime hours when the owner is more likely to be working, as difficulties w/ quality control involving young staff seems like a recurring theme in reviews (which I get, like I said, I worked in a pizza shop and some teens are great workers, but you always get some that aren't that you need to...

I went back the other day and got the vegetable Stromboli again and ended up getting two. One for me and my son. Guess what my son had ate already so I was left with two. Why those two didn’t last not even a hour. Yum 😋 With the garlic sauce I couldn’t stop. So so good....
