Carrboro is a snobby expensive hipster town. Johnny's Gone Fishing is a welcome relief with fantastic coffee. It is a little old house that has been converted to a coffee shop. The dining room has a big table if you're meeting up with a large group of friends. The rest of the coffee shop/house is filled with comfy armchairs, local art, and musical instruments that anyone can pick up to play anytime. During the cooler summer months they have a huge outdoor space with patio furniture, lots of plants, and a comfortable atmosphere. Also, the coffee is delicious and the food they sell (sandwiches) are from local restaurants and are reasonably priced.
Edit: This is my favorite coffee shop in town as well as my favorite place to hold an event. The peppermint mocha is phenomenal and the staff is super friendly and experienced. I came here on my first date with my husband due to the funky-fun-but-not-hipster-snob coffee shop atmosphere and it is what keeps bringing us back. When we were looking for a place to have our wedding of 30 guests, we decided upon Johnny's Gone Fishing! We didn't have to worry about bringing too many decorations since the cafe has the perfect ambience and set-up was easy. Renting JGF for a few hours was affordable and the staff went out of their way to make everything perfect for us. Our guests raved about the drinks, especially the tea selection.
Other highlights: They are very service animal friendly, there is a community garden outside, there is a good selection of food for both vegan and gluten free, lots of games to play for adults and kids, there are musical instruments for you to pick up and play, and an ongoing jigsaw puzzle you can drop in...
Read moreI really love this spot. The cafe is a re-purposed house, so the space has a different feel than the other coffee places around town. They also have a range of chairs/sitting places, so you can change it up, depending on how you're feeling (Want a window seat today? Need a hard seat to keep you alert and focused? Perhaps a soft chair for chilling? Have a group of five or six people that you want to sit together? They've got all those options covered).
This would not matter as much if they didn't deliver on the caffeinated goods, and they do. I often get cortados, and they never disappoint. All the fancy latte and mocha drinks I have tried have been good. They also have an extensive (de)caffeinated tea list, and some nice pastries. The ice cream is also a sleeper hit--go for the coffee, stay for the dessert.
The staff of Johnny's is also a highlight. They are all super pleasant, and always make tasty drinks, even when things are busy. They host a range of weekly/monthly activities, and help make the space feel more unique and welcoming. Awesome local piano players come in once or twice a week to serenade your homework hours, too.
I obviously spend a lot of time at Johnny's, but it's because of all the reasons mentioned above. There are numerous other coffee shop options around Chapel Hill and Carrboro, but Johnny's trumps them all in my mind. It's a local and somewhat hidden place that never feels elitist. Your time and money is...

When is walked in the atmosphere was peaceful and so many creative art pieces. That was attraction for me there. I was greeted by the owner actually whom was very welcoming and open. I felt heard and understood- I can be complicated. I would recommend them to anyone who visits the area.,It was really a vibe. Thank you for your hard work and commitment to you city.
