Last night at El Punto Sabroso we were treated to more than just delicious food (you have to try the Rellenos de Papa, you will thank me later)—we stepped right into Puerto Rico’s soul. 🎶 The night was alive with Plena and Bomba, the rhythms that carry the heartbeat of the island.

✨ Bomba is the oldest of Puerto Rico’s musical traditions, rooted in the island’s African heritage. Born on the sugar plantations over 400 years ago, it’s a call-and-response between dancer, drummer, and singer. The dancer challenges the drummer with each move, and the drummer answers back—an improvised conversation of rhythm and movement.

✨ Plena, often called “el periódico cantado” (the sung newspaper), emerged in the early 1900s in Ponce. With panderetas (hand drums) and güiro, it became the people’s way of sharing stories, news, and social commentary through music.

At El Punto Sabroso, it felt like being at the warmest of house parties—everyone invited to join in. People brought their own panderetas and güiros, one even showed up with a trombone! 🥁🎺 The energy was pure joy, a living celebration of Puerto Rico’s musical culture.

The fish fillet, local fish was huge! I got mine with garlic sauce , side of fried plantain. So surprised that they don't have rice and beans in the menu! But the yumminess of the fish compensated for the absence of rice. My child got chicken fingers with fries, thumbs up on that, too. Order is taken at the counter, the lad who took our order was very helpful and thorough. Very friendly servers. Reasonable wait for our food. Only negative was the styrofoam containers. Will...

Heard about this place on YouTube and decided to give it a shot. Right near the ferry pier in Cataño so for 50 cents, you can take a ferry here from San Juan. The rellenos are just as delicious as any I've ever had and the fillings are amazing. I had the shrimp (camarones) and my partner had the tradicional beef. Both were wonderful. Also try the sangría or a cold Medalla. Will definitely visit again next time...
