We went on a Wednesday for lunch, the first day of the week they are open and, unfortunately for them (and unbelievably because of how good It was), we were the only customers in the place! (Several people did come in for takeout orders while we were there.) Sullange (the chef and proprietess) says the next few days get progressively busier, with Friday and Saturday being quite busy. Sunday, too, is very popular, serving traditional Trinidadian dishes.
We were 3. We each had a different dish, with different side dishes. Each one was better than the next. Everything was excellent! Mike had the day's special: pepper shrimp with white rice and mix cabbage, with an extra side of bhagi (spinach cooked in coconut milk), Rick had the curried chicken with a side of potato and channa (chickpeas) and an extra side of fried sweet plantains, and I had the curried goat, with white rice and bhagi. All the proteins were excellent! (Note: If you get the curried goat, be careful! There are a lot of little, potentially tooth-breaking bones, but if you order it, you probably already know.) Everything was interestingly and perfectly spiced and cooked, but if you like some extra heat like I do, ask for some of their homemade pepper sauce. I mean, this stuff is no joke! A little goes a long way! The sides were all standouts! The potatoes and chickpeas could be a meal in themselves, and the spinach in coconut milk was to die for! If you like creamed spinach, you'll love bhagi! And with less guilt. And to find nice, ripe, sweet fried plantains in Columbia is a real treat!
Besides the excellent, totally homemade food, they had three excellent, freshly made juice drinks on offer. Mike got the sorrel, which is a tart fruit (similar to currants or cranberries) brewed with cinnamon and clove and sweetened. Rick had the passion fruit, which was sweet and delicious, and I asked for the ginger beer. I expected a bottled, carbonated drink, which I love, but instead, I got a cloudy, milky drink that tasted strongly of ginger and was delicious and not too sweet.
Sullange was an excellent host and very pleasant host! We will definitely be going back...
Read moreI have visited Trini Lime Caribbean Cafe four times in the last week and have taken to go boxes on two occasions. That's six meals and I enjoyed them all. The menu has such a great variety. Just make sure you check to see which items are available on a particular day of the week. Each dish and side is explained thoroughly so that you know the ingredients and they are made fresh daily. The dishes are served hot and remain hot throughout the meals and laughter that were had each time I went. The portions are great! You will either leave full or with a to go container and they taste just as great the next day. I have had the stewed chicken, oxtails and salmon and enjoyed them all. The owner/chef is engaging, enthusiastic and proud of each dish and your dining experience. The prices are more than reasonable for the portions received. Did I mention the drinks are also made from scratch? I know I will be back next week and bring more friends to experience this filling and delicious food. Don't miss it!!
On another note, the owner also told me that in order to not waste food, she takes daily leftovers to homeless shelters. That's giving back in such a great way. Go out and support this...
Read moreAs a trini I am highly disappointed with my experience. The atmosphere was nice I enjoyed hearing the Soca music. However, the woman behind the counter does not know what’s on the menu, she is not familiar with Trinidadian cuisine. Being the cashier you’d expect the person to know what they are recommending to people who are not familiar with the food. Let’s start on the food. We spent $54 in there and I felt as if it was a complete waste of money. The roti was not fully cooked. The curry lacked flavor and spice and was too salty. It also did not come with white rice and the spinach was very soggy…it was nasty. I ordered escovitch fish and this really was the cherry on top. The fish was not a whole fish. Instead I received a fried fish filet with some peppers and onions on top….that is not right. To claim you are a trini testa yet serve such a disgrace is unacceptable and makes us trinis look like we have nasty food. Good idea poor delivery. I hate that I spent so much money on this meal. It was not good. The drinks were especially nasty. The ginger beer tasted like dish soap and the sorrel was very American, did not...
