Nelly's is outstanding, and I wish more ethnic restaurants in the area followed their lead. When I walked into the simple and unpretentious dining area, I was amazed by the lack of tacky decor. Too often when a restaurant claims food from a specific country, the dining room feels like a trip to Epcot's World Showcase. This isn't always bad, but it often removes the focus from the food. By faithfully preparing Bolivian dishes, Nelly's extends South American culture through its food.
When I arrived at the counter to order, I was impressed by the extensive array of South American dishes. Peruvian and Equatorian restaurants are somewhat common, but they focus on ceviche, thus missing many of the other great dishes South America has to offer. Nelly's offers some more difficult to find dishes such as Silpancho and the Milanesa (de Pollo o Carne). It also offers some great sides like Tostones and Fried Plantains. Nelly's signature dish however is their rotisserie Chicken.
I ordered the Chicken with Rice, Tostones, Fried Plantains and French Fries. The Chicken was delicious. Moist and perfectly seasoned, the chicken was the best I've had in a long time. The rice was outstanding as well, loose but not dry, distinct in taste but not overshadowing the flavors of the meat. The fries were soft and not greasy which allowed them to mix well with the rice and chicken. The Tostones were great and tasted as if they had come straight from the pan of a Latin American grandmother. The Fried Plantains were okay, next time I will order more tostones and consider skipping the Plantains. Regardless, they added to the meal and were tasty.
By offering outstanding food, and bypassing some of the tacky decor often associated with country-specific restaurants, Nelly's offers a unique and delicious dining experience which I encourage everyone...
Read moreCame in with my boyfriend on a Sunday afternoon to get two 1/4 chicken meals. First, we walk in the restaurant and the hostess (older lady) assigns us a table where we do not like so we asked for another one near the window and she refused, so we ended up sitting at an uncomfortable spot because she forced us to. We were fine sitting there and decided to forget what happened so we got our food and drinks just fine until our server came when we were almost finished eating with the bill, I wanted to try a tres leches dessert so I asked her for one but they ran out, so I asked for a chocolate cake instead and she told me she would check to see if they had some, we waited over 20 mins! So, I finally decide to just pay and leave, when I put my card inside the book where the receipt is she comes to us to take it but before she took my card I asked her about the cake again and she told me she forgot... She went back in to check and came back saying they did have some but never apologized for making us wait that long. She asked if I still wanted the cake and I said yes and also asked for a refill of water since she never asked this whole time. So, I got the cake but since it wasn't free or offered for a lower price for making us wait I decided to just tip her $1, oh and she forgot the refills too. I was very upset, I enjoyed the cake and the food was very good but the service is horrible! The hostess (older lady) makes me and my boyfriend not want...
