When we heard Robin and Windy were opening up their own sushi restaurant, we knew we'd have to go. Let me tell you... it was beyond what we expected. The other night, Brad and I had the visual and culinary pleasure of dining here. First, the restaurant is very well thought out. It's small, but that allows for intimate dining. The sushi bar has a good amount of seating and there are outdoor dining tables available, too. Personally, I prefer sitting at the sushi bar so I can take in the artistry that Robin is doing. Brad and I left our dining in Robin's hands. He started us off with items from his Tapas section: Hamachi pesto - hamachi sashimi, jalapeño slices, micro greens, edible flowers and a little dollop of pesto, served over crushed ice. Beef Carpaccio - Seared filet mignon , truffle salt, ponzu, scallion, olive oil, micro greens and edible flowers, served over crushed ice. Black Truffle Salmon - Seared salmon, volcanic salt, shaved black truffle, ponzu sauce, micro greens, edible flowers, served over crushed ice. Tuna Lettuce Wrap - Seared Bluefin tuna, oshinko, scallion, wasabi, butter lettuce, chimicurri vinnegrate. Next, Robin served us a killer roll, the Prime Salmon - Salmon, avocado. Top : seared salmon, spicy aioli, dill, lemon zest, smoked roe. LET ME TELL YOU. The smoked roe was to die for. I've never experienced it before, and it was so unique!! The smoking takes away the saltiness that roe usually has and created this soft, smokey umami that ties the fattiness of the salmon belly together. Just .. wow. Lastly, we had a few nigiri selections: A tuna trio consisting of Bluefin, Medium Fatty and Fatty tuna. Eel topped with foie gras. Salmon Roe Red Snapper Needless to say, we didn't leave hungry. LOL I want to point out how lucky we are to have someone like Chef Robin here in Charlotte. Sure, he gets excellent grades of fish, but it's the passion/care, artistry and love he puts into preparing his food. You can taste it. He and Windy are truly warm and humble people and the combination of the food and their hospitality is why we will forever be fans. Thank you,...
Read moreThis is such a great sushi restaurant! It’s small and intimate, so we sat at the sushi bar.. honestly best spot in the house! Yes, we ended up ordering more based on recommendations from the chef, but it was totally worth it!
Our waitress was so nice and helpful and even gave us some of her own personal Japanese snacks before we left! The sushi chefs were very knowledgeable and kind, answering any questions we had. Its always such a great experience watching chefs create art with food! Also, we ended up sitting next two other groups and had great conversation! The couple next to use was on a first name basis with the chef and just asked him to make them what ever he wanted. He put together some beautiful nigiri and sashimi creations for them!
The overall restaurant design was simple and tasteful, with the main focus being the sushi bar. The space was well lit, but not too bright with decorative pendants at the bar. (Sorry I didn’t get many interior photos) The barstools were comfortable but being that my husband and I are a bit taller our knees were pressing up on the bar front, could also be a shallow bar top, but the sushi made up for it and I just got used to it! (Didn’t need to use the bathroom so can’t comment about that!)
Here’s what we ordered, 🍣= favorites and will definitely order again. Nigiri: Scallop (ordered twice)🍣 Barracuda (special) Yellowtail Young Amberjack (special)
Rolls: Naruto 🍣 Sake Yaki 🍣 Truffle Crab Crispy Umami
Overall, price really wasn’t that bad for the quality level and atmosphere. We will definitely be coming back especially to try one of their many Sakes they had to offer!
Side note: I wish the other reviewers on here would stop harping on the plates they serve on. You go to a sushi restaurant for well prepared fish. That’s their focus. The bamboo plates are more eco-friendly than using water and chemicals to disinfect...
Read moreThis place is overrated and overrated priced. I arrived at 825pm. They close at 9p. I ordered wine. A glass was $16 next option was $26. I thought it was half a bottle....nope....a 10oz pour. Not knowing the menu and portion size, I ordered spicy seared scallop. No spice and not a sear in site....raw. The scallop was flavorless. At least it wasn't fishy.see the picture for yourself. At 835 I order a spicy tuna thinking I will see if I am full. Nope, the server says last call. I reminded him they close at 9 and pointed to the crew showing they were closing up shop. I ordered a California roll. As I thought the portions were different and I ordered too much. The spicy tuna, not spicy. Not much flavor either. The California roll was really good because the avocado was so fresh. I normally don't order California roll but was forced to order so I picked something I could trust because I was pressured to choose. The atmosphere was not impressive. Most seating was around the sushi bar. The best part was how freaking cold it was in there. They had the door to the patio open and cold air was screaming in there. I never took off my puffy coat. At 849, the waiter turns all the lights off in the sake and wine cooler. It was my clue to get the heck out. Nothing like a $50 meal to be rushed out the door. Everybody cheerfully wished me a good night when I left at 849 because I was the last customer standing between them and leaving. I worked late tonight abd was hoping for a relaxed...
