Overall, good experience. The food was okay, but nothing amazing. Several items tasted reheated or even from frozen. That's understandable as the prices were pretty fair. The scallops were breaded and deep fried which I didn't expect but I'm not complaining because they were really good. The oil in the fryer probably needed changing but it was acceptable. The crab cakes were interesting with a crumb breading and deep fried instead of baked but still tasted good. The chowder was the only thing I didn't take any home because it really did taste about like canned chowder, so not bad but just not special. The clam strips were great, way more tender than the stuff I can usually get at the store and nice browning. Mom liked the calamari strips but wished they were served with honey mustard. The bread was tough though, so I revitalized out at home with a wet paper towel in the microwave, all fixed! The melted butter was insanely garlicky and the herbs were perfect just overwhelming for what we had. Still, gonna use the leftover on steak and it's going to be amazing. The staff was polite and attentive, with no complaints about the service. I honestly regret not getting the special, clams in white sauce. I bet that would have been the best thing. Definitely worth trying the place out but unfortunately I can't quite rave even though...
Read moreI've been going here for a couple of years now. I get the Alaskan Cod fish and chips w baked potato instead of fries (available after 6pm).
I've tried fish and chips at lots of other restaurants since the 1980s and I'm not exaggerating when I say that this place serves the best fish and potato dish I've ever had, hands down.
The fish is always fresh, the batter is fine and flavorful and never greasy. The fryer oil is always fresh and clean, and never old or smelly like you often find elsewhere. The baked potato is big and cooked perfectly. The clam chowder is rich and delicious and even the oyster crackers on the side are top quality.
Every time I eat here I feel like the chefs put all of their love and care into the food. It's really that good, and worth every penny. Prices are decent, and they have senior specials which are amazing.
I hope the owners of this restaurant keep doing what they're doing. This restaurant is a real gem in this town. Love the nautical themed...
Read moreWe really had a great time here. Yes, they are most known for their fish-and-chips, but they also had some great (non-deep-fried) dishes as well. My wife ordered the baked Halibut with baked potato and said the fish was perfectly cooked. I stuck with the fish-and-chips (Alaskan Cod) and was pleased to find that the fish had actual texture as well as taste. Too often restaurants will think they can cover the taste of bad fish with batter and frying. I'm pleased to report that Pelicans Roost doesn't fall into that category. The fish was fresh (not frozen) and only lightly battered. The staff was super-nice and accommodated all of our special requests. We only found it on the advice of family, and I can't believe we've missed out on eating here for years. It's at the very end of a strip mall with a Safeway, and kind of hidden from view as you drive by on East Avenue. I'll call it a hidden gem... We will...
