This authentic Soul food restaurant definitely feeds the Soul! The options for food were so plentiful, it was difficult deciding what we wanted to eat! The menu changes daily based on specials and product availability, however, there's usually at least 3 - 4 items available in each category of meat (beef, pork, chicken, & fish) and sides that are main staples. According to the owner, Monica, "This menu is subject to change; items may not be available; it's on a first come first served basis. Our mission is to sell out to bring you the freshest ingredients."
One can view the menu outside on a sidewalk sign as well as in the board on the wall above the cashier inside.
A friend from South Africa visited with us and tried soulfood for the first time here. She absolutely LOVED it! Monica & her mother, Tiny, greeted her and made her feel welcome as they strive to do with all of their customers when it's less hectic. We ordered the candied yams that are hand peeled fresh Every morning & good enough to eat for dessert, golden whiting fried to order, fluffy yellow rice, pinto & navy bean mix with turkey meat in the broth, pork neck bones w/ potatoes and sauerkraut, babyback pork ribs, smoked bbq beef ribs (sauce on the side), white rice, cheesy baked macaroni and cheese, crispy fried green tomatoes, and moist, sweet cornbread (more similar to jiffy than hot water cornbread). The salmon croquettes, grilled salmon, scalloped potatoes, lasagna, party wings, and fresh garden salad are also favorites
Everything was flavorful, succulent, and well proportioned! We couldn't eat it all in one sitting, and it's just as satisfying reheated.
The ambiance is homey with the pictures of family and friends on the wall. We listen to R & B music while waiting for our order (primarily a Takeout restaurant), & there are comfortable chairs and tables. Typically, customers wait outside, standing or sitting in chairs, until their receipt number is called for pickup at the pick-up window.
Quote on the menu sent from the owner: "So take a load off today and enjoy a day filled with a touch of food, culture, and soul. Let us at Just Cookin' serve you today and every day. THE PLACE TO CALL WHO HAS IT...
Read moreI really loathe having to leave such a negative review. My bestie recommended Just Cookin BBQ to me. As she knows that I love patronizing our black businesses. I went over there today and had no problem ordering the meal I chose. The cashier who took my order was polite & professional. But that's where it ended. I ordered fried chicken, Mac & Cheese with some cabbage & the free mixed beans. Paid $24, got my receipt, and went to sit down. I waited 1/2 hour for my food and had to inquire 2 times if I hadn't heard my number. There were customers who came in after me getting their food before me. I wasn't giving any attitude or showing any signs of being upset. I waited. When the lady in the kitchen finally did call my number (#84), she said it as if I was wrong for inquiring about my food 2x...nasty! I hurried up & went to the window to get my food and asked if the sauce I'd requested was in the bag and was told yes. I thanked her and left. I get home, excited to try my food, and to my dismay, the food was sub-par. The Mac & Cheese was dry, and chicken and cabbage were just okay. The meal purchased was far from being delicious. The wait time for most of what I ordered that was already done was (Mac & Cheese, cabbage & rice that came free with the meal) was ridiculous! How long does it take to drop party wings in the deep fryer? The lady in the kitchen's customer service left something to be desired. I really wanted to be able to write a fantastic review. However, I'm sorry to say I won't be...
Read moreDecided to surprise my husband for Father's Day this pass Sunday. Very very disappointed with Just Cooking, I spent almost $ 50.00 on this special day for my husband. Ordered Chicken & Dressing dinner, Lamb chops dinner. Mind you 25.00, for each, received two chicken leg quarters, No dressing no gravy, Was told at the last minute, there were no more Lamb chops, wanted me to get back in a long line to reorder because they didn't have anymore Lamb chops, I was already at there window to pick up my order. I just told them to just give salmon patties, which was cheaper than lamb chops. I asked for my sides that come with the Salmon dinners, this lady with Attitude says to me, you only getting one side, after all this confusion. I was very very disappointed with how they treated me, standing in this line all this time to hear them arguing over all mistakes being made with customers orders. Don't bother trying to call to speak with a manager or someone, they will never answer. Show's me it's ok to take customers money, and there no satisfaction in your service. I've been coming there for some years now. Will not be returning, I believe I'm not the only one. Good luck, please turn this place around in a hurry....
