My partner and I decided to try out Social on State last night for dinner while she was in the area. I liked the atmosphere of the restaurant. The bar looked really organized and clean and it was quite nice. It was pretty full so I assumed it to be promising; thankfully we had made reservations. The hostess was friendly with us and so was our waitress. We ordered the bread & dips, mac and cheese, brussels sprouts and the spicy tuna tower. We also ordered a glass of chardonnay and a cocktail that was their version of a French 75.
I want to say first and foremost that the food had potential. None of it was necessarily bad, but both my partner and myself agreed that it was just...lacking. The brussels sprouts were tasty and a pretty generous sized portion, but really could've used another competent...maybe a side of sauce--something creamy? There was a light sauce on them but it felt incomplete as a dish. The mac and cheese was alright, but lacked salt...maybe could benefit from something crispy atop as well. Overly rich, even for mac and cheese. The spicy tuna tower had only an accent of spicy sauce on the side of the tower itself...not really what I was expecting so that might be my bad, but I feel like it could've benefitted from additional sauce. We both remarked that the best food of the night was the bread & dips, but saying that felt kind of laughable.
My girlfriend said the chardonnay didn't taste like much but my drink was maybe the worst cocktail I've ever had. It tasted like I had drank a spray of perfume. Our waitress had asked about it when she noticed I hadn't touched it and I had mentioned that it wasn't my favorite. She asked if we'd like to take it off the bill, which was considerate and I appreciate her having offered that.
Really the reason that I write this review is because if you're going to be tacking such high costs on to the food that you're serving, it really needs to be top-shelf. All of these dishes felt as though they were still in their infancy, like the execution of them wasn't fully brought to fruition yet. Social on State unfortunately didn't meet our...
Read moreThis was a taste extravaganza! We were just passing through town, but found this on Yelp and were in the mood for Tapas. It was a little hard to get to (the GPS took us to the next street, probably because State street was under construction), and then of course we had to find (free) parking. But once inside, it was such a cool vibe. Their craft drink list was superb. My boyfriend and I each had one (I can't recall what the names were, although his was a take on a whiskey sour), and they were excellent. We ordered the Arugula Burrata salad, which was delicious (I was sad when it was over), Asparagus fries (think Asparagus tempura and you'd be very close), and the meatballs. All excellent! And when we have excellent food, we must order dessert, so we tried their take on pineapple upside down cake, only it was a trifle! If you like pineapple, you will love it -- light and fluffy and pineappley! Excellent service, genuinely friendly, and very cool vibe. Highly...
Read moreMade a reservation for 8pm, got there at 7:50 and didn’t end up being seated until almost 9pm. Once we were seated, we waited another 10 minutes until the waitress finally took our drink and appetizer order. That then took another 20 minutes to come out. She dropped it off at our table without saying a word then came back, I kid you not, 30 minutes later asking “did you guys want to order food?” No ma’am we’re just here to hangout, I mean cmon. We ended up leaving the restaurant at 10:15. Food was pretty good, not spectacular and it was very expensive. Hostess and waitress were both very rude in general. But the bartender was awesome and very attentive so the 1 star...
