With the exception of 2 years that I lived in Glassboro I lived in Clayton from 1961 through 1989 and never once came here for a meal unless I just don't remember it. Since my mom was one to always have a home cooked dinner on the table we rarely if ever ate out with the exception of an occasional fast food while on vacation. Recently since I travel around a lot for work I have been trying a lot of different diners as well as other restaurants so I won't have to go home and cook a dinner after a long day of work. Yesterday morning I had reason to be in Clayton and although work has slowed down a bit and I could have gone home and had a good breakfast there I decided to check out the Liberty since the reviews I had read were sounding like it would be a real good choice for a meal. Not knowing what to get I decided to try the bed and breakfast sampler since it would give me a little of all the normal breakfast fare that all diners offer eggs, bacon, sausage, french toast, pancakes and home fries. Everything with one exception was good even down to the bacon being cooked just the way I like it without my even asking and the butter and syrup were not in those stupid little plastic containers but in a nice bottle and small cups. My only exception was the sausage that although it tasted good it was a little on the fatty side but now I know and will just get bacon next time. All the staff were helpful and pleasant even to where they were able to let me know what the dish was that I saw someone else had ordered that looked much better than I had seen the same dish elsewhere. If I am ever in town again and needing a meal I will not hesitate to come back and see what their lunch or dinner menu consists of and maybe even recommend them to coworkers I am...
Read morePassing through Clayton, hunger hit and we stopped at a diner on the main road, with no expectations, since most diners are the same. Wrong. Great food, fantastic service, and conveniently located. The hostess was great, she sat us in a booth with a window view. The restaurant definitely have off that diner feel, with vintage decorations and a counter to eat at. At the same time, the atmosphere felt very easy and welcoming. There seemed to be quite a few regulars. And the place was clean. Very clean. Our waitress came promptly, gave us our menus and told us the specials. I wish I had caught her name, she was fantastic, and saved my meal from being ruined. I ordered an Italian panini, and the menu did not say it came with chicken breast, which I did not want. I inquired if the vegetable soup was made with beef or chicken stock, to which she replied no, so I got a bowl. Well, not many people would have caught that, but she did. She double checked to see if the sandwich contained meat, which it did - she immediately came back and asked if I wanted the chicken on it, which I did not. Problem solved before it occured, due to a diligent waitress. The food came, and it was good! The roasted red peppers on my panini were huge, and flavorful, and the mozzarella melted perfectly. The vegetable soup was good as well. All in all, the bill was around $20, which was an absolute bargain for this quality of food and service. We enjoyed our meal, and again, the waitress was on point and really made the experience better. Thanks, and if I'm ever passing through Clayton, I know...
Read moreAlways looking for anything but a cookie cutter national chain. Boring and predictable is not on the menu. This is a true NJ diner. We had skipped breakfast and it was well after lunch when our DMV road trip took us out of shore bound traffic on the way home from Runnemede, NJ. This stop at Liberty Diner turned out to be well worth the stop. Ecstatic that the Liberty hasn't lost the diner flare for polished pale pink marble tile and dark woods, this stainless steel and vinyl seats repository of memories of what a diner should be and can be a destination. Trepidation set in when ordering our omelets but we were surprised that they were well made and filled. Watching other orders walk by made our mouths water as well. Wish I wasn't on a diet, of sorts. The tasty bakery treats were what you come to want in a diner. Watching the table nearest us diving into huge slice of Boston cream pie was torturous. I could smell the slice at 10 feet away. The staff was friendly and quick to rescue the empty cup from getting cold by refilling that precious coffee to steamy goodness. I look forward to making the diversion on to Delsea Drive and off 55 to get to...
