I stopped in with my Mother and my two sisters for lunch. My Mom is in a wheelchair, we were seated immediately, it seemed like we were treated special for my Mom's sake. Within thirty seconds a very delightful and friendly server brought salsa and chips and took our order for drinks. She returned within two minutes with the drinks and asked if we were ready to order, we were, so we ordered and our food came out in about ten minutes. That was fast service. We enjoyed a very pleasant lunch. I have to mention a humorous part of our experience. One of my sisters thought that she had found a human tooth in her bowl of menudo. She became quite loud and obnoxious with our server, our server was very calm and professional, she called a manager to our table and after examining the alleged "tooth", it was proven to be a small bone, probably from an oxtail which they use in the recipe. I must say, it was quite embarrassing for us to have to put up with my sister's crude behavior. I have been to this place over twenty times over the years and have never seen food prepared badly. This behavior on my sister's part was very unfair to the restaurant. Although the restaurant did absolutely nothing wrong, they graciously prepared an order of sopapillas for us to go, no charge. The customer service here is top notch. We were very pleased with our experience. I did not mention that my sister was a little bit tipsy from drinking. We will be going back to this excellent restaurant in the near future for another meal, quite probably without my sister. She is going to get a happy meal and stay home the next time we go out to...
Read moreFrom the outside, this place looked like a hidden gem. The parking lot was always packed, and since it was close to our Airbnb, my two friends and I decided it had to be worth trying. We walked in expecting authentic Mexican food and a fun dinner.
The first sign things weren’t quite right was the sticky booth we were seated at. We ordered waters and margaritas, which were advertised for $5, and then placed our meals. When I asked for jalapeños, the waitress asked me five different times if I was sure — reminding me over and over that they were “spicy.” It was uncomfortable enough that when she walked away, I turned to my friends and asked if that seemed strange. They agreed it definitely was.
As we waited, we started to notice something else: the room was full of only white diners, which felt odd in a neighborhood that’s predominantly Hispanic. Then our margaritas arrived, and that was another disappointment. They tasted harsh, like straight cheap tequila with nothing to balance it out.
When the food finally came, it was… mediocre. Bland, flat, maybe a 2/10. And after all the questioning about jalapeños, my plate didn’t even have them. By then, we had already decided this wasn’t the experience we had hoped for.
The last straw came when the check arrived. The “$5 margaritas” we ordered? They were listed at $13 each. At that point, we just paid and walked out, shaking our heads.
I’m not usually one to leave reviews, but after this, I felt like I had to warn others. Don’t let the packed parking lot fool you — the food, drinks, and service here just don’t live up to...
Read moreFirst and for most I would like to start off by saying how wonderful these experiences were IN THE PAST. My father loved this restaurant and we would go here for most of his birthdays. They always brought out the big sombrero and sang Happy birthday, and gave him a small individual dessert. As the years went by, they stopped with the sombrero but continued with the dessert.recently in November we visited the location downtown, and they once again honored the birthday girl with a free so-papilla . Today, I took my grandmother to the north location just 5 min from our home, to celebrate her birthday, when we told the waitress it was her birthday, she said “oh happy birthday, would you like churro or flan?” My grandmother chose flan, the the waitress asked the rest of us and we ordered our desserts. When the bill came, we noticed the Flan she had offered my grandmother for her birthday was not deducted from the bill, when I asked the waitress she said “oh no we don’t give free food here” she repeated this multiple times after we acknowledged and said oh okay. This was embarrassing as her response and tone were almost as if we were wanting to scam them with a $4 dessert. We honestly continue to go there because of the familiar feeling we get, but the food has decreased in quality. Food is no longer what it once was for their pricing, menu items are not what is pictured on menu and now I guess not even is the service good. This was the end to our birthday celebrations at this restaurant. May i recommend El paraíso on...
