I discovered this bakery about 20 years ago on my annual visits to Orlando to see family. It was after Mass at the church across the street that I would look forward to coming to this bakery to pick up those delicious guava cream cheese pastries which were amazing compared to the ones I've had at Porto's in CA.
Back then it was more of a mom & pop operation so the display cases were packed with bakery goods and there were lots of friendly employees behind the counter. It was also packed with tables in the center and there were lines out the door. The vibe was just awesome, festive and crowded.
Fast forward to now and I was surprised by the change. My cousins told me it had expanded into a chain which sounded great but there were so many changes this time around which made me miss the old mom & pop shop vibe.
First the shop got an upgrade in design which looked great but it wasn't as warm and welcoming with the roped line in the center and lack of tables inside. Also the display cases had changed dramatically in terms of quantity of foods on display.
Second and most importantly the food. I remember those cheese filled bread puffs used to be gigante and super fluffy and soft. This time it had shrunken in size and lacked that fluffy soft texture and was not as yummy as I remembered. The guava pastry had also shrunken in size and was not as fluffy as I remembered either. I don't know if it has to do with the flour to yeast ratio but it just didn't have the same quality as my previous visits here.
Lastly the service was lacking as there weren't as many employees and it wasn't that friendly and welcoming as before. The shop was empty since there were no tables inside and only a few outside. But it wasn't packed to the brim with people like I remembered from my early visits here. Maybe it's the weird post-covid atmosphere we're living in but the character of the place has changed a lot and it's more like a fast food atmosphere. I guess they want you in and out of there! Hope they at least bring back the old way of making...
Read moreDisappointing customer service at Fortuna Bakery today. Being someone who is always on the look for the best in others, I have to confess the big disappointing experience I had today while purchasing breakfast at "Fortuna Bakery", located right in front of Holy Church. I got there wearing my mask and following standard social distance. Made a purchase but was told to wait for one of the items which was a few minutes from being ready. The place was almost empty (perhaps 6-7 people waiting in the line), so I stood nearby the pick up window against the wall to wait for my order, when I was approached by a very nice Hostess asking me to please wait outside. I told her that my order would be ready in just a few minutes and that, since the place was almost empty, I'd prefer to wait inside the AC (rather than under the 95+degrees outside). She kindly understood and allowed me to wait inside. When my order was ready, this same hostess went to the front counter to pick it up for me. And here comes the disappointment ... The lady who handed her my order (seemed to be one of the supervisors or yet worst owners), gave me an almost despicable look (so she knew I was looking at her) ,then turned her gaze to the hostess, asking her to tell me that, "next time, if I could not wait outside then I should not bother to come back". While my jaw dropped to the floor, I could only repeat to myself: Really?????. I can totally understand the stress that this pandemic situation has caused in many people, so I purposely try my best to keep my coolness while outside ... But this behavior? ... it was plain awful manners, in addition to an exceptional display of bad customer service. Definitely there's room for improvement and re training right there. She was right about one thing though, after that so inappropriate treatment, I wouldn't even consider to put my foot on that door... therefore they lost a great customer and got a very bad review on my book, regardless of the quality of...
Read moreMy family and I have been La fortuna customers since they were about half the size this current location is, so probably for 10 years +, and we LOVE the food. However the past few times I’ve visited, the customer service has been lacking. So I am going to have to find another bakery, which sucks. :/
For more details:
Orders are either missing something or the wrong item is bagged. I didn’t write a review before complaining, but it keeps happening, so I am done. One time I ordered 7 beef empanadas and received 7 chicken ones, I didn’t call back to complain because I figured, mistakes happen. Another time , I ordered the bigger empanadas and received the smaller ones, and had to go back to receive the ones ordered. And today, a pan trenza was paid for but not placed in the bag, had to call back and the girl that answered, Andrea, informed me that the manager would reach out to me after reviewing the transaction, 30 mins passed, no call back, so my brother that lives in the area (I live in Clermont, so yes far) had to go pick up the bread. No one ever gives an apology, it sucks that the customer has become so bad.
My advice check your order inside the store before leaving the bakery because they won’t apologize for...
