Was completely disillusioned. First visit to the new Oakwood location. Was told a 25-minute wait. Took 1 hour. Young waitress with a ponytail down her back, asks if we want appetizers. We were starving, and got mozzarella sticks, a big pretzel, and all my husband wanted was French onion soup...BEFORE his meal. We sat. And sat. Then the pretzel came, which is why the 1 star. It was awesome, but not enough to pull the weight for the rest of the debacle of a visit. Finished the pretzel. No soup. No cheese sticks. No waitress. Finally, she appeared and we asked where the rest of our "appetizers " were, and she rushed to the almighty computer. Probably forgot to order them. My dinner salad and 3 pieces of bread, WITH MARGARINE.(CMON. GET REAL BUTTER. I DONT LIKE CHEMICALS ON MY BREAD...JOHN.) Still no appetizers. Then out comes the cheese sticks WITH OUR MEAL!!! We had told her we didn't want the soup if it was with the meal. So she brings it after my husband starts on his 10 dollar BURGER WITH AN UPCHARGE FOR FRIES..(who does that?...John?) And says she can pack it up to go. Yep. That's what we want. We said no. Instead if saying, take the soup home because I suck as a waitress, she took it away. A horrible dreadful and expensive experience this last evening. Will be crossing John's $$$ Bar and Grill off our MENU of places to dine. Just remember, John, bad word of mouth travels much faster than good word of mouth. We were not pleased, and no one tried to make our experience right. Won't be back. Oh...and ..don't get the scrod. IT takes like freezer. Blechhhh ADDENDUM: Just read a review regarding the mind numbing noise level. 11 months ago a patron complained about the stadium- level noise in this 1 room debacle. Apparently, John is STILL WAITING FOR SOUND ACOUTICS TO ARRIVE. WE COULDN'T HEAR EACH OTHER SPEAK! AND THE TEENY TINY OLD BOOTHS FROM CLEVELAND AVE. CMON JOHN. Change out your scrod...
Read moreJudge the new location as a completely different resturant and you will generally be pleased. The staff is friendly, it is very clean and the food is good. We tried a range of items including past favorites for comparison and took several boxes home. The main thing off was the flatiron was overcooked to well done on one side and nearly rare on the other vs medium well. While still good enough that I'd consider returning if someone else suggested it, I really have no plans to do so myself. I was a previous patron and big fan of John's but this is more like going to an average chain resturant in a similar trendy location. Nothing about this place is of the same quality which extends well beyond the loss of the charm of the original. As stated by others it is one large room with tables a bit too close together and very, very loud. You have to raise your voice often to a yell or repeat yourself multiple times to order. You can barely hold a conversation, yet hear the herd of soccer mommy's chewing between complaining about how hard thier lives are. This is just not the same and sad to see John's become such.
My five star reveiw of the original Excellent... I don't get to come here as often as I used to but it is always impressive. You have to try the butter dipping sauce with your steak. I'm not a seafood fan myself but my friend raves about it here when we go. Good service, place is quaint but classy with food that's well worth any wait...
Read moreThis was my first experience at the new location and I was extremely disappointed. We did get seated quickly because we were just a party of four, but after that nothing was quick. Not that it has to be quick but arriving at 6:30 and not leaving the restaurant until 9:00 is a little long when most of the time we were just sitting and waiting on food and drinks. Our table was next to the hostess station and the phone just rang and rang and nobody answered until finally we decided to answer the phone because obviously nobody else that worked there was going to. When the callers ask about the wait we told them a good 3-4 hours. They “ran out” of ribeye steaks after we had ordered and were waiting on them. Our appetizers came to our table one hour after we ordered them, when the food did arrive it was either missing items, or wrong. The bill was split at our table (two couples) and our waiter had things split incorrectly but we didn’t want to wait around to have him correct it because we didn’t know how much longer that would have taken. The table next to us who was seated a few minutes after us, actually left before their food came because the wait was so long and there was no time in sight for their food to arrive. It was just an overall bad experience. I don’t ever need to go back to John’s again, save a trip and a few hours of your time as well and...
